Potential Applications of Directed Acyclic Graphs in the Design and Interpretation of Biomedical Research
This article presents an algorithm for constructing and applying directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) in the planning of epidemiological and biomedical studies. DAGs are graphical tools for modeling complex relationships between variables, which is particularly relevant in biomedical science, where accurate assessment of causal relationships requires accounting for potential confounding factors. The importance of DAGs is emphasized for conceptualizing …
Quantitative microbial risk assessment for drinking water-associated population
The risk assessment method is used to study the probability of adverse public health outcomes when using contaminated drinking water, with acute intestinal infections representing a predominant concern. A quantitative microbial risk assessment is a mathematical system designed to calculate the probability of the development of the infectious diseases caused by the pathogenic microorganisms present in drinking water. The microbial risk assessment …
Dietary preferences of children in the Nenets Autonomous Area considering ethnic affiliation
BACKGROUND: Children living in the harsh climatic conditions of the Arctic zone are among the most vulnerable age groups. Among all the constituent entities of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation, the Nenets Autonomous Area is considered a high-risk territory for primary morbidity in the pediatric population across all classes of diseases. The dietary preferences of children residing in the Nenets Autonomous Area therefore warrant special a…
Alcohol and cause-specific mortality in Russia
Narcology patients face markedly higher mortality risks-threefold from all causes and cardiovascular diseases, ninefold from external causes, and sevenfold from other causes. Compared with the general population, conventional mortality risk factors were less predictive of deaths in narcology patients
Assessment of regional exposure factors associated with soil impact in cities of the Arctic region
Background: Unfavorable climatic conditions determine the interaction between people and soil in northern territories, differing from those in southern regions of Russia. When assessing risks, standard exposure factors (EFs) must be adjusted to reflect regional characteristics.Aim: TO study regional EFs used to assess health risk from exposure to chemical soil pollutants in urban areas of the Arctic zone.Material and methods: A cross-sectional st…
Assessment of health risks posed by heavy metal contamination of wild mushrooms and berries
BACKGROUND: One of the primary objectives in ensuring food security for the population is to reduce the mitigate the risk of chemical contamination in food. Wild mushrooms and berries have the potential to accumulate heavy metals from the environment, posing a threat to human health if consumed.AIM: To assess the risk of developing general toxic effects associated with the consumption of wild mushrooms and berries on health of the adults living i…
Association between Alcohol Consumption and Body Composition in Russian Adults and Patients Treated for Alcohol-Related Disorders
There is conflicting evidence about the association between alcohol consumption and body composition (BC). We aimed to investigate this association in Russian adults. The study population included 2357 residents of Arkhangelsk aged 35-69 years, and 272 in-patients treated for alcohol problems (narcological patients) who participated in the Know Your Heart (KYH) cross-sectional study in 2015-2017. The participants were divided into five subgroups …
Assessment of the chemical and radiological safety of wild mushrooms and berries growing in the Arkhangelsk region
AIM: To analyze the levels of contamination with heavy metals and radionuclides of wild mushrooms and berries growing in the Arkhangelsk region.METHODS: Data on the content of heavy metals (cadmium, mercury, lead, arsenic) and radionuclides (cesium-137 and strontium-90) in berries and mushrooms were studied in accordance with the protocols of the Agrochemical Service Station Arkhangelskaya and the Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology in the Arkhan…
Association between atmospheric air temperature and blood pressure among adult population in different seasons
BACKGROUND: The prevalence of hypertension in the Arkhangelsk region is steadily increasing. Despite the progress in the diagnostics and the availability of treatment, a half of the population are unaware of their hypertension and its potential consequences, and consequently, do not adhere to the prescribed medications. This lack of awareness, coupled with the challenging climatic conditions of the northern regions, can significantly increase the…
Age-related aspects of myopia incidence in the European North of Russia
INTRODUCTION: Identification of sensitive age periods connected with a significant increase in newly diagnosed myopia, especially of medium and high degrees, is important to clarify the timing of medical examination and prevention of complications of myopia, taking into account age and gender in the European North of Russia. AIM: To analyze the primary incidence of myopia in the age-sex structure of the population of the Arkhangelsk region, with …
Weather Conditions and Outdoor Fall Injuries in Northwestern Russia
This study aimed to investigate associations between the weather conditions and the frequency of medically-treated, non-fatal accidental outdoor fall injuries (AOFIs) in a provincial region of Northwestern Russia. Data on all non-fatal AOFIs that occurred from January 2015 through June 2018 ( N = 1125) were extracted from the population-based Shenkursk Injury Registry (SHIR). Associations between the weather conditions and AOFIs were investigated…
Quality of Drinking Water and Epidemic Risk of Water-Born Infections in Towns of the Arkhangelsk Region
Aims: to assess the quality of drinking water using microbiological indicators and to assess epidemic risks of water-born infections in urban settings of the Arkhangelsk region. Methods: Secondary data on standard sanitary and hygienic assessments of the quality of centralized drinking water supply in Arkhangelsk, Severodvinsk, Novodvinsk, Kotlas and Koryazhma for 2006-2016 were used. Assessment of the microbial risk of water-born infections was …
The First Population-Based Injury Register in Russia
From 1 January 2015, the first Russian population-based injury register has been routinely used for registration of all traumas requiring medical assistance in the municipality of Shenkursk, Arkhangelsk region. It was built up on the injury registration model that was used in Harstad, Norway. The aims of the injury registry are to monitor injury rates and develop evidence-based preventive measures at the municipal level. The source of information…
Estimation of Health Risk Factors Perception by Medical Workers
The cross-sectional epidemiological study has been performed to identify peculiarities of health risk factors perception by different categories of medical workers in the Vologda Hospital. Radioactive (91.4 %), chemical (87.6 %) and microbiological (73.7 %) pollution was perceived by the respondents as bringing the highest risk to health. The average risk factors included genetic and biological factors (61.7 %), emergency situations (58.8 %) and …
One-Way Analysis of Variance (Anova) in Stata Software
In the article, we have presented theoretical principles of one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for comparisons of three or more independent groups. Examples of the use of ANOVA with manual calculations using formulas have been given as well as algorithms of the use of ANOVA in STATA software. Special consideration has been given to the assumptions which have to be tested as well as the ways to present the results in research papers
Introduction to Stata - Software for Statistical Data Analysis
This is the first article of the series of publications in the Human Ecology journal on biostatistics using STATA software. Earlier series of methodological papers published in 2008 was adapted to SPSS software. However, the price for SPSS in Russia considerably increased in recent years that led to the fact that many institutions switch from SPSS to STATA. It is worth mentioning that STATA is as popular as SPSS in European universities and resea…
Analysis of Three Independent Groups Using Non-Parametric Kruskal-Wallis Test in Stata Software
In this paper, we have presented theoretical principles of analysis of three or more independent groups using the Kruskal-Wallis test. We have presented calculations using formulas as well as a step-by-step algorithm for use of this test in STATA software. Moreover, we have given practical examples with special emphasis on assumptions of this test. We have also presented recommendations for presentation of results in scientific publications
