Alcohol and cause-specific mortality in Russia
Narcology patients face markedly higher mortality risks-threefold from all causes and cardiovascular diseases, ninefold from external causes, and sevenfold from other causes. Compared with the general population, conventional mortality risk factors were less predictive of deaths in narcology patients
Association between Alcohol Consumption and Body Composition in Russian Adults and Patients Treated for Alcohol-Related Disorders
There is conflicting evidence about the association between alcohol consumption and body composition (BC). We aimed to investigate this association in Russian adults. The study population included 2357 residents of Arkhangelsk aged 35-69 years, and 272 in-patients treated for alcohol problems (narcological patients) who participated in the Know Your Heart (KYH) cross-sectional study in 2015-2017. The participants were divided into five subgroups …
Sample size calculation for cross-sectional studies
The cross-sectional study design is widely prevalent in Russian medical literature. However, a significant number of these studies neglect to calculate the sample size during the planning phase, and the analysis often relies solely on basic bivariate statistics. This compromises the validity of the findings and increases the risk of drawing inaccurate conclusions. The scientific rigor of a study depends on a quality of planning, a clear problem st…
