  • Construction of a Maiden's Garland

    Peter Brears, Peter C D Brears•ARTICLE•Folk Life•1982

In 1859 the last Maiden's Garland was carried at Fylingdales Old Church for the funeral of Janey Levitt. This garland still survives relatively complete (see Fig. (8), opposite), but it has suffered considerably from woodworm, while its textile decorations are so fragile that they would shatter if handled. The accompanying drawings were prepared in October 1982 while the garland still hung in its glass case. They are substantially accurate, but f…

  • The Knitting Sheath

    Peter Brears, Peter C D Brears•ARTICLE•Folk Life•1981•References: 3

In their introduction to European Folk Art, Robert Wildhaber and Hans Jürgen Hansen stress the need for further studies into this most significant but neglected subject.1 They then proceed to reject totally the popular nineteenth-century view of folk art as an expression of nationalism, arguing that the arts of any region or state all follow great international stylistic movements, although their detailed application may vary considerably even fr…

  • Heart Gravestones in the Calder Valley

    Peter Brears, Peter C D Brears•ARTICLE•Folk Life•1981•Cited by: 4

A number of quite difficult problems arise when dealing with the decorative elements of the material culture of a community. Due to the influence of innovative craftsmen, national fashions, and the changing needs and values of the community, they may be subject tosubstantial change which can only be recorded and analysed where a sufficient number of closely provenanced examples survive. This paper seeks to study these influences with regard to a …

The techniques of making oatcake in Yorkshrre during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries have already been thoroughyy dealt with in two major articles, but a recent study of archival sources within the county has thrown considerable light on the earlier practices, and it is additional informaiion that forms the basis of the present paper.Due to their poor soil and damp climate, the hills of the West Riding were unsuitable for the successful pr…

  • Techniques of the Truro Pottery

    Peter Brears, Peter C D Brears•ARTICLE•Folk Life•1972•Cited by: 1

Although the products of the craftsman potter are fairly well known, little work has been done on his working techniques, even though they appear to have varied considerably from one area of the country to another. In 1900 there were still about a hundred coarse earthenware potters working throughout England, but their numbers have been reduced drastically over the last few years, so that there are now only two such potteries in fulltime commerci…

  • The Truro Conference, Spring 1971
