    I934) the Gautier-Reygasse expedition discovered some rock paintings and engravings of exceptional interest. The expedition was working in Tassili, the old sandstone plateau north of Ahaggar where the Azger Tuaregs pasture their herds. To the northeastward is the frontier of Tripolitania; the Italian oasis of Ghat lies just to the east.     IN earlier journeys in the French Sudan I traveled along the Niger bend; and in the course of a recent journey I have seen the colonies of Senegal, French Guinea, Upper Niger, and the Ivory Coast. So this article is not altogether an arm-chair study.
