The Balanced Budget Act of 1997 and Rural Training Supported by Medicare Graduate Medical Education Funds
The Balanced Budget Act of 1997 promised a number of changes in medical education to benefit rural communities. The changes suggested that physician training would be more available in rural communities, programs training physicians for work in rural communities would be better supported, and residency programs would be allowed to be separate from hospitals. The regulations developed by the Health Care Financing Administration to implement the ac…
An Expert Panel Approach to Assessing the Rural Implications of Health Care Reform
The policy arena is hungry for objective information regarding the potential effects of comprehensive national and state health care reform. Such information reduces the dependence of policy-makers on information generated solely by advocacy groups and serves as a checkpoint for such information. Unfortunately, the academic community is often unable to mobilize its resources quickly enough to help meet this information need. This article describe…

A new ‘New Guinea syndrome’ and the utility of geography
Human geographers working in Papua New Guinea and elsewhere in Melanesia are tending to work in multidisciplinary teams. This reflects the utility of geography where the specialist‐synthesis and a fieldwork approach is wanted and needed by consultants, lending and aid agencies, and government departments. Work on the Less Developed Areas program and integrated rural development planning in Papua New Guinea are used as examples of the sort of work…
On Assessing Nutritional Status in the Papua New Guinea Highlands
Gardening activity, food supply and nutritional status in the southern highlands of Papua New Guinea
A survey was conducted in three areas of the Southern Highlands to examine seasonal patterns in gardening activity and body weights and their inter‐relationship. The pattern of gardening activity during the two years of the survey (1981–83) was typically one of constant activity, with minor and regular fluctuations in response to normal social and climatic occurrences. However, an abnormally dry period during the survey disrupted this pattern and…

Environment, economic development and the nutritional status of children in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea in 1983
An anthropometric survey of a sample of children under the age of five years was conducted in the Southern Highlands Province. A census was conducted at the same time. The purpose was to examine the distribution of malnutrition throughout the province and its relationship to environmental factors (as expressed by altitude) and to socio‐economic factors (educational levels, wage earning and cash earning activity). The rate and type of malnutrition…
The seasonal factors influencing child malnutrition on the Nembi Plateau, Papua New Guinea
Assessments of the nutritional status of children on the Nembi plateau in 1978 and 1980
This study was carried out to assess the nutritional status of Nembi Children of Papua New Guinea in 1980 compared with that in 1978; to assess the pattern of child growth on the Nembi Plateau compared with that of a neighbouring highlands group, the Lagaip Enga; and to test the hypothesis that the rate of child malnutrition was not uniform throughout the altitudinal zones of the Nembi Plateau. The results show that Nembi children had a growth pa…
