  • Information exposure and economic losses during food safety outbreaks

    Open Access•Xuerui Yang, Andrew S Hanks et al.•ARTICLE•Food Policy•2026•References: 46

Before 2020, fresh onions were rarely associated with major foodborne illness outbreaks in the United States. However, two major multistate outbreaks in 2020 and 2021 resulted in over 2000 reported illnesses and substantial economic losses. This study examined consumer and market responses to onion-related foodborne outbreaks occurring between 2017 and 2021, using household panel and retail scanner data through May 2022. We introduced Google Tren…

  • Environmental risk factors associated with community diarrheal disease in Ethiopia

Open Access•Devin LaPolt, Stephen Smith et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Multiple environmental factors for diarrhea were identified. Given the variation in factors by site, strategies for intervention and management should be community-specific. These factors can be managed through improved water treatment, sanitation practices, and educational programs focused on proper hygiene. Efforts to manage these factors can potentially reduce the burden of diarrheal diseases

  • Facilitating Evaluation of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome Long-Term Health Outcomes Through Social Media Support Groups

    Open Access•Aaron Beczkiewicz, Aaron T E Beczkiewicz et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2020

Individual burden and cost of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS)—a medical condition characterized by acute kidney failure—can be substantial when accounting for long-term health outcomes (LTHOs). Because of the low incidence of HUS, evaluation of associated LTHOs is often restricted to physician and outbreak cohorts, both of which may not be representative of all HUS cases. This exploratory study recruited participants from private social media sup…

  • Food Safety Instruction Improves Knowledge and Behavior Risk and Protection Factors for Foodborne Illnesses in Pregnant Populations

Open Access•Patricia A Kendall, Robert Scharff et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2017

Open Access•Hua Zan, Robert L Scharff•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2014

  • Evaluating Chronic Disease for Heterogeneous Populations

    Robert L Scharff, Amber Jessup•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2007•References: 7

BACKGROUND: Cost-effectiveness evaluation for health care programs often involves the use of quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) estimates to measure morbidity losses from health conditions. Current techniques for measuring morbidity losses are often subjective, inflexible, impractical, and subject to bias. OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine the impact of population heterogeneity on QALY values for arthritis sufferers by estimating an alternative heal…
