Predictions for Residential Environments in the 21st Century
Looking towards the 21st century, predictions regarding the future have taken place in various fields. We are at a point where we must confront future residential environments by examining how predictions regarding these environments differ among countries with different cultures and lifestyles. In this study, architecture and housing-related professionals from Korea, Japan, Singapore, the United States, and the United Kingdom were surveyed about…
Housing Affordability
A major concern of the American public is housing affordability. The purpose of this study was to investigate how general housing market factors differed between rural and urban counties in a midwestern state and their effect on housing affordability. Research results suggest that in urban counties the housing market factors have a higher mean score than those of rural areas. Housing financing programs and regulations are more apparent in urban a…
Empirical Evaluation of Relationships in a Proposed Perceptive‐Boundaries Paradigm
This article presents an evaluation of relationships in the perceptive‐boundaries paradigm. The paradigm encompasses previous work in sociopsychological aspects of housing and provides a conceptual basis for integrating prior findings into a holistic model. Perception of adequate housing is based on culture, experiences, norms, and values. Perceptions are believed to filter one's view of the housing environment and influence both housing preferen…

Housing Values Patterns and Orientation of Households
This article assesses the housing value patterns and the impact of socio-demographic characteristics on housing value orientation. With a paired-comparison format which included family, personal, economy, and social value statements, two popular housing value patterns were identified based on ranking orders: “FEPS” (family-economy-personal-social) and “FPES” (family-personal-economy-social). When a paired comparison of the statement of economy an…
Innovative Housing Adoption Model for Households
Rogers’ Innovative-Decision Theory was used to develop a framework and model to study acceptance of innovative housing. The dependent variables for the model were level of knowledge, innovativeness, willingness; and attitude toward housing innovations. The independent variables included the basic demographic and social variables that influence the housing acquisition process. Sex, age, and education were important in the adoption process. The hou…
The Determinants of Residential Environmental Qualities and Satisfaction
As an exploratory study, an environmental evaluation model was proposed and tested. To test the model, an Analysis of Linear Structural Relationships (LISREL) was used. County housing practices (financing, housing programs, and housing regulations) were included as well as socio-demographic variables as exogenous variables. Despite some measurement error, overall model fit was concluded. There was no direct effect of exogenous variables on reside…
