Conscription in Britain, New Zealand, Australia and Canada during the Second World War
During the early stages of the Second World War, the governments of Britain, New Zealand, Australia and Canada each adopted sweeping powers to conscript men into their respective armed forces. When conscription was subsequently extended to encompass productive as well as military activities, and made applicable to women as well as men, it quickly became a web that entangled every aspect of wartime life. The Debates of the Past’

Willing and Eager to Go in Their Turn’? Appeals for Exemption from Military Service in New Zealand and Great Britain, 1916–1918
The Military Service Acts that introduced conscription in New Zealand and Britain in 1916 permitted appeals for exemption to a Military Service Board or Military Service Tribunal. This paper questions the inference that around half of all balloted New Zealanders appealed and argues that British men were considerably more likely to appeal. It is unlikely that this was due to satisfaction with the exemption process, a belief that appealing was not …
Eco-Minimalism as a Virtue
Eco-minimalism is an emerging approach to building design, construction, and retrofitting. The approach is exemplified by the work of architect Howard Liddell and sustainable water management consultant Nick Grant. The fundamental tenet of this approach is an opposition to the use of inappropriate, unnecessary, and ostentatious eco-technology-or "eco-bling"-where the main emphasis is on being seen to be green. The adoption of the principles of th…
