This study examines women's leadership through a rhetorical lens. Thirty women leaders in church, business, and higher education were interviewed with an eye toward discovering ways in which their use of language shapes and is shaped by their sense of themselves as leaders, the legacy of leadership they bring to their roles, and the importance of their words for the people with whom they work. • Turn-Taking on the Telephone

    Open Access•Jane Stephens, Geoffrey Beattie•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Social…•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This study was designed to investigate some important aspects of turn-taking in one type of structured telephone conversation, namely, travel enquiry calls. Specifically, it investigated under what conditions subjects could distinguish turn-final and turn-medial utterances taken from such conversations and presented out of context. The first part of the investigation sought to determine if judges could make this distinction on the basis of an aud…

  • On Judging the Ends of Speaker Turns in Conversation

    Open Access•Jane Stephens, Geoffrey Beattie•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Social…•1986•Cited by: 2•References: 15

This study sought to determine if subjects could discriminate turn-final and turn-medial utterances taken from different types of natural conversation and presented out of context. The main aim of the study was to see if subjects could make this distinction when presented with either an audio recording of the utterances, thus testing the role of prosody, paralanguage plus syntax and semantics in the turn-taking process, or a typescript of the utt…

  • Use of the AML scale to identify adjustment problems in fourth‐, fifth‐, and sixth‐grade children

Open Access•Darwin Dorr, Jane Stephens et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•1980•Cited by: 3•References: 8

This paper summarizes a series of studies of the technical merit of the AML scale when used to detect school maladaptation in a sample of 684 fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade children. Teachers, who did the rating, readily accepted this screening device. Preliminary norms are offered. Reliability and factor analytic studies show a reasonable degree of uniqueness and internal consistency among the three AML subscales. Relationships to other children…
