Indigenous Language Knowledge and Educational Attainment Among First Nations People
This study investigated whether associations between Indigenous language knowledge and educational outcomes might be changing for cohorts of language speakers over time. Using Census and National Household Survey data, educational attainment for First Nations people aged 20 to 34 was examined at four time points (1996, 2001, 2006, and 2011), separately for those able versus unable to speak an Indigenous language and separately for those living on…
Smoking Among Off-Reserve First Nations, Métis, and Inuit High School Students
Using data from the 2012 Aboriginal Peoples Survey (APS), this study investigated associations between smoking and a number of school, peer, and family characteristics among off-reserve First Nations (n = 2,308), Métis (n = 2,058), and Inuit (n = 655) high school students aged 12 to 21 years. Housing and Health among Young First Nations Children Living Off Reserve
First Nations children in Canada often experience poorer housing conditions than other Canadian children. This study used the 2006 Aboriginal Children’s Survey to examine the relationship between housing and physical and mental health for First Nations preschool-aged children living off-reserve. This study provides evidence that the physical, spatial, and psychological aspects of housing in which young off-reserve First Nations children live are …

The objective of this study was to examine factors associated with school outcomes among elementary school-aged Inuit children in Inuit Nunangat through a socio-ecological framework. The associations among children’s school outcomes and various individual, family, and school factors were examined using the 2012 Aboriginal Peoples Survey. Logistic regression analyses suggest that an Inuk child who is healthy and not hungry, whose parents obtained …
Community Well-Being among the Registered Indian and non-Aboriginal populations in Winnipeg
The CWB Index has been developed to investigate well-being at the community level using census subdivisions to define the different types of communities. Because the basis for analysis is the entire population of a community, the presence of non-Aboriginal populations living in First Nations or Inuit communities, or of Aboriginal people living in “other” (non- Aboriginal) communities, has not yet been considered. Therefore, to date, the differenc…
Registered Indian Children's School Success and Intergenerational Effects of Residential Schooling in Canada
Using the 2006 Aboriginal Peoples Survey, this study investigates factors associated with school success (as perceived by parents) among off-reserve Registered Indian children aged 6 to 14 in Canada. Holding other factors constant, Registered Indian children were more likely to be doing well at school if they were living in households with high income, were living in adequately maintained dwellings, or spoke an Aboriginal language at home. Boys a…
Intergroup Contact and Minority-Language Education
The authors consider two related approaches that may be important in the amelioration of language-based discrimination. The first focuses on the attitudes of the dominant-language group and applies recent perspectives on the intergroup contact theory to suggest ways of reducing prejudice among members of the dominant group. Research with White/Anglo children in California are used to show the potential benefits of bilingual over English-only educ…
Early Heritage-language Education and the Abrupt Shift to a Dominant-language Classroom
This research explored the impact of the abrupt shift from heritage-language to dominant-language education on Inuit children's personal and collective self-esteem. Specifically, the following question was addressed: will early heritage-language education serve as an inoculation against the potential negative impact of being submerged in a dominant second-language environment, or will it just delay the negative impact of this submersion? Results …
