The reversal of populism. Assessing the explanatory power of the ideational approach in contemporary Argentina
In this study we conduct a least-likely case study in order to assess the analytical power of the ideational approach to populism. We do so by testing the direct and conditional effects of populist attitudes on vote choices in Argentina. We examine whether populist attitudes are associated with the Peronist vote, as more essentialist interpretations would lead us to expect, or, on the contrary, linked to vote for right parties, an expectation tha…
Varieties of Inclusionary Populism? Syriza, Podemos and the Five Star Movement
Over the past years, parties often described as populist, such as SYRIZA in Greece, the Five Star Movement (FSM) in Italy and Podemos in Spain have made significant electoral breakthroughs, unsettling well-established party systems. In the literature, inclusionary populism has primarily been applied to Latin America whereas the three Southern European parties have been examined individually, but not in comparative perspective. The purpose of this…
Entre la comunidad y la diversidad. Aproximaciones recientes a los dilemas de la organización territorial del poder
This book review examines some recent contributions to the study of the political articulation of cultural diversity. This text analyzes the role played by nations and political communities in these works, examines the political-institutional alternatives addressed by these authors (federalism, regional authority, multilevel governance, international organizations), and explores the main challenges and constraints faced by these governance models…
Economic crisis and the variety of populist response
Greece, Portugal and Spain are among the countries worst hit by the 2008 Great Recession, followed by significant electoral and political turmoil. However, one of the dimensions in which they differ is the presence and varieties of populism in parties’ political proposals. Drawing on holistic coding of party manifestos, we assess the varying presence of populist rhetoric in mainstream and challenger parties before and after the 2008 economic down…
Peripheral identities in contemporary Spain
This article examines the individual and contextual factors affecting peripheral identifications in Spain. It does so by conducting multilevel statistical analyses on two surveys on regional and national identifications that were carried out by the Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas in 1996 and 2006, at two very different political conjunctures. At the individual level, these analyses show that peripheral identifications are strongly conditio…
Syriza’s Electoral Rise in Greece
Between 2010 and 2015, a period of significant political change in Greece, the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA), a minor party, achieved and consolidated major party status. This article explores the role of political strategy in SYRIZA’s electoral success. It argues that contrary to accepted wisdom, targeting a ‘niche’ constituency or protesting against the establishment will not suffice for a minor party to make an electoral breakthrough.…
The Populist Radical Right and European Integration
This article analyses the links between populist radical right parties and their voters regarding European integration in 11 European countries. It does so by using data from the 2008 European Social Survey and the 2006 UNC-Chapel Hill Expert Data Base on political parties and European integration. In addition to mapping the Eurosceptic orientations of political parties and their voters, the article examines the degree to which attitudes towards …
Zippin’ up My Boots, Goin’ Back to My Roots
Radical left parties actively encourage the participation of their members in internal decision-making and insist on promoting organised links to trade unions and social movements. As a party family, they deviate from what is considered to be the trend in which Western political parties have turned their backs on their social roots. Drawing on the experience of South European radical left parties from the fall of the Berlin Wall until the recent …

The Radical Left's Turn towards Civil Society in Greece
The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) made remarkable ‘turns towards civil society’ over the last decade. It is argued that this was primarily a response aimed at strengthening their social legitimacy, which had reached its lowest point in the early 1990s. Differences in the way the two parties attempted to stabilise and engage their membership and re-establish links to trade unions and new social move…
Euroscepticism and the Global Financial Crisis
This article explores the link between the financial crisis and Euroscepticism at the level of public opinion, building on and developing further the literature on the impact of economic, identity and institutional factors on Euroscepticism. It argues that the economic crisis did not substantially bring economic factors back in as an important source of Euroscepticism, even though the most pronounced increase in Euroscepticism has taken place in …
Slovenian Employment Policy
Slovenian employment policy was subject to ‘soft’ Europeanisation despite the lack of normative resonance between entrenched policy ideas and new policy ideas embedded in the European Union's Employment Strategy. The key mechanisms at work are shown to be voluntary policy transfer and diffusion, rather than strategic use of Europe by key domestic actors to bring about policy change. This article argues that normative resonance is not a necessary …
Governance vs. politics
Governance practices fail key democratic tests coming from interest aggregation, deliberative and agonistic theories of democracy. It is argued that the European Union is best described as a complex web of governance practices and, therefore, that its 'democratic deficit' is constitutive. In contrast to what is often thought, it is not by strengthening 'good governance' practices but by treading parallel paths of constitutionalization and politic…
A Parliamentary Dimension for EU Soft Governance
Why has the weakness of the parliamentary dimension in the extensive array of soft governance practices that have exploded in the European Union (EU) since the turn of the century gone largely unnoticed? Is that weakness a problem for input legitimacy and, if so, to what extent can it be overcome by compensating with other, non‐parliamentary channels of legitimacy? An argument from accountability will be put forward, according to which strengthen…

The Popular Party and European Integration
Since the democratization of the Spanish system, the right has undergone a series of rapid ideological and organizational changes. This article examines the shifts in European position of the Popular Party (PP) in the context of these broader programmatic changes. It explores the shift from post-Franco solidarism to neoliberal economic policy in the context of the European market, the development of an intergovernmental perspective on European go…
Claims to Legitimacy
This article attempts to spell out the Commission's present position on the following set of questions: according to which normative criteria can European integration, European governance and the Commission's own roles in the two processes be considered legitimate? Taking the 2001 White Paper on Governance as a reference point, it is argued that the Commission is trapped between two sets of claims to legitimacy: one set of claims coming from the …
