Comparing News Beat Structures across 13 Countries
Almost 200 years after their inception, news beats became a dominant factor that shapes newsrooms. This study explores the beat mix of leading quality dailies in 13 countries. Findings are based on executive interviews triangulated with other data sources. They indicate a shift from geographic to thematic division of labour and the rising trend of beat sub-specialisation. Newsroom size matters but not linearly: larger newsrooms are not larger acr…
Violencia Contra La Prensa
Concurrently fading away and strengthening
One of the structuring logics behind the creation of news beats is the geographical one: that is, national, foreign and local news desks. Foreign and local beats, in particular, have a lot in common: the coverage of different geographical contexts increases the diversity and plurality of views; reporting from geographical peripheries is always the costliest in terms of production; the audience is more dispersed; and geographical news beats can cr…

Caught in the Middle
With 33 journalists killed since the beginning of Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s presidential term in December 2018, Mexico heads the list of the most violent countries for journalists in Latin America—and that of countries not at war. While journalist organizations demand a meaningful protection apparatus to safeguard their physical safety, official corruption, and criminal impunity continue to escalate the pressures to which media staff are expo…
Bringing History back into Media Systems Theory
Since Hallin and Mancini's (2004) seminal work, many scholars from around the world have proposed different models of media systems for countries and regions outside the Western world. Particular challenges have arisen when conceptualizing the systems in Latin America, where shifting liberal and polarized pluralist models have been proposed, and where media traits like clientelism and collusion remain in spite of political, economic and social ch…
Unidos o fragmentados?
What is Professional Journalism? Conceptual Integration and Empirical Refinement
In spite of its common use, professionalism is not a self-explanatory concept in the field of journalism studies. Even though there is an already extensive literature on this issue, what its basic elements are and how they can be assessed are still subject of debate. In order to contribute to this discussion, the article proposes a conceptual model that integrates four categories: routines, orientation, autonomy, and training. The proposal made h…
Corruption framing in Latin American media systems. A comparison between Mexico and Chile
Exposing corruption acts is one of the most important duties of watchdog journalism. Nonetheless, approaches to their coverage vary depending on the media and political systems. This study aims to put forth the systemic dimensions of these approaches by comparing how Chile and Mexico’s most influential newspapers respectively covered corruption-related scandals during the 2017 and 2018 presidential elections. In doing so, this article draws on qu…
Reportear bajo amenaza
How Do Journalists in Mexico Report on Organised Crime
Among the many outcomes of the so-called War on Drugs, Mexico has become one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalism. Besides killings and kidnappings, journalists are also frequent victims of beatings, arbitrary detentions, and online harassment, as well as many other acts of aggression. Anti-press violence has an evident impact on Mexican journalists’ daily activities, particularly as related to the coverage of organised cri…

Mexican Journalism Under Siege. The Impact of Anti-press Violence on Reporters, Newsrooms, and Society
As a consequence of the endemic anti-press violence, Mexican journalists work under dangerous conditions. The constant assaults have eroded the practice of free journalism and thus, the people’s right to know. Drawing on a set of semi-structured interviews with news workers from the most violent states across the country, this study emphasises that this phenomenon has a threefold impact at the individual, organisational, and societal levels. That…
Beyond Exogenous Models
Mexican journalism scholars have resorted to exogenous models of the press to study this country’s news production. This has imported standards developed abroad and has hindered the analysis of Mexican journalism in its own terms. In order to reverse this trend, this article develops an inductive approach focused on the organizational discourses which gave form to Mexican journalism’s modernization. Identifying the development of the “prensa vend…
Double-edged knife
Violence against Mexican journalists has received significant attention from scholars at home and abroad during the last decade. However, though a diversity of issues have been consistently studied, there is one topic that is still largely neglected: the implications of technology for news workers’ security and their journalistic practice. Drawing on a set of semi-structured interviews with 93 journalists working in 23 of the most dangerous Mexic…
They don’t trust us; they don’t care if we’re attacked
Drawing from 93 semi-structured, in-person interviews with journalists from 23 states, this article analyzes the relation between trust and risk perception in Mexican journalism. It focuses on how Mexican journalists perceive and experience public trust placed in them as social actors, and how it influences their willingness or reluctance to assume the risks associated with reporting on corruption and drug-trafficking in a country marked by anti-…
Silence or alignment. Organized crime and government as primary definers of news in Mexico
The aim of this article is to explain, through the concept of Conflict Discourse System, the influence that Mexican government and organized crime exert on the news-making process. The results of the analysis prove that, considered as sources of information, authorities and cartels frequently determine the agenda and framing of the coverage of their activities. This the outcome of the use of bribes and/or violence. As a result, at the moment of c…
Plata o plomo
Investigative journalism in Mexico
The aim of this paper is to analyse the state of the investigative journalism in Mexico, especially the one that is practiced at the local level in the provinces. That is, this research is based upon a case study conducted in Morelia, the capital city of the state of Michoacán. The empirical evidence will show that there is an evident divergence regarding the practice of the investigative journalism: on the one hand, journalists are aware of what…
