  • Exploring Long-term Landscape Changes in a Rural Catchment in Southern England, from the Mid-nineteenth Century to the Present, and Their Implications for Future Land Management

Open Access•Cat Hudson, Harold Lovell et al.•ARTICLE•Landscapes•2024

Landscapes are shaped by long-term environmental and cultural interactions. The English farming economy has developed in line with shifting land tenure, market integration, and environmental challenges, to its present focus on delivering agri-environmental goods and services under public subsidy. Agricultural intensification, land conversion and enclosure have coalesced into the landscapes observable today. Mid-19th century tithe survey maps offe…

  • Terrestrial glacial geomorphology of surge-type and non-surge-type glaciers on Svalbard

Open Access•Rebecca McCerery, Bethan J Davies et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2024

This paper presents a map of terrestrial glacial geomorphology of eleven surge-type and non-surge-type glacier forefields in southwest and west Spitsbergen, Svalbard. Glacier forefields were mapped using a combination of field surveys and the use of an uncrewed airborne vehicle in September 2022 and satellite imagery captured in 2020, with mapping performed in ArcGIS Pro at a 1:5000 scale. Maps were constructed for glaciers in Van Kuelenfjorden a…

  • Glacial geomorphology in the Wicklow Mountains, Ireland

Open Access•Lauren Knight, Clare M Boston et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2023

We present a detailed 1:50,000-scale glacial geomorphological map covering ∼450 km2 of the Wicklow Mountains, eastern Ireland. The region was glaciated at the Last Glacial Maximum, but little is known about the timing and pattern of deglaciation during the Last Glacial-Interglacial Transition or the extent of glacier regrowth during the Younger Dryas. The absence of detailed glacial geomorphological mapping has been a barrier to understanding the…

  • Evolution of the Norwegian plateau icefield Hardangerjøkulen since the ‘Little Ice Age’

    Open Access•P Weber, Clare M Boston et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2019•References: 5

The maximum ‘Little Ice Age’ (LIA) glacier extent provides a significant baseline to assess long-term glacier change and to place currently observed rates of glacier recession in a broader temporal context. To that end, we examine the evolution of the plateau icefield Hardangerjøkulen since the LIA. First, we reconstruct Hardangerjøkulen’s maximum LIA extent (~AD 1750) and subsequent recession based on the glacial landform record and aided by his…

  • Manual mapping of drumlins in synthetic landscapes to assess operator effectiveness

    Open Access•John K Hillier, M J Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2015

Mapped topographic features are important for understanding processes that sculpt the Earth's surface. This paper presents maps that are the primary product of an exercise that brought together 27 researchers with an interest in landform mapping wherein the efficacy and causes of variation in mapping were tested using novel synthetic DEMs containing drumlins. The variation between interpreters (e.g. mapping philosophy, experience) and across the …

  • A glacial geomorphological map of the southernmost ice lobes of Patagonia

    Open Access•Christopher M Darvill, Chris R Stokes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2014

This paper presents a glacial geomorphological map of the landforms created by five large ice lobes that extended eastwards from the southernmost reaches of the Patagonian Ice Sheet during the Quaternary period. The study is focussed on Tierra del Fuego, but also updates previous mapping of the Skyring and Otway lobes, and the resulting level of detail and extent is a significant advance on previous work in the region. The map has been created as…

  • Evidence for ice streaming and abrupt high-magnitude proglacial lake drainage in the Seno Skyring-Seno Otway-Strait of Magellan region, southernmost Patagonia

    Open Access•Harold Lovell•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2012

  • A glacial geomorphological map of the Seno Skyring-Seno Otway-Strait of Magellan region, southernmost Patagonia

Open Access•Harold Lovell, Chris R Stokes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2011

This paper presents a detailed glacial geomorphological map covering over 16,000 km of the Seno Skyring-Seno Otway-Strait of Magellan region in southernmost Patagonia. It builds on previously published maps produced at a variety of scales and is re-mapped in detail for the purposes of reconstructing the pre-Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) glacial dynamics of the region, with particular focus on deciphering the glacial landsystem north east of Seno Otw…
