Computer-aided detection for radiological disease severity classification on chest radiograph in children with intra-thoracic tuberculosis
Implementation of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommended shorter 4-month treatment regimen for non-severe tuberculosis (TB) in children requires classification of disease severity on chest X-ray (CXR). Access to specialists for CXR interpretation is limited. We explored the use of computer-aided detection of CXR (“CAD”) to automate CXR classification of radiological disease severity. To do this, we combined three CXR datasets from chil…

Children, caregivers and health workers’ perceptions and experiences of the XTEMP-R tool to improve tuberculosis treatment
Treating drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) in children remains a significant challenge for patients, caregivers, and health systems, despite advances in child-friendly drug formulations. While new formulations offer benefits, their widespread availability is limited, and many exhibit poor palatability. A key strategy to improve administration and mask the taste of paediatric TB medications involves creating extemporaneous suspensions. However, …
Substance use correlates for emotional intimate partner violence perpetration and victimization
Objectives: This meta-analysis aimed to explore the connection between types of substance use and emotional intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration and victimization for both men and women. Method: Data from 86 studies, yielding 129 effect sizes, were analyzed. Effect sizes for the relationship between each substance use factor and perpetration and victimization were calculated. Q -statistics were calculated to examine if there were signific…
The relationship between emotional intimate partner violence and other forms of violence
The present study aimed to explore the relationship between emotional intimate partner violence (IPV) and different forms of violence (e.g., stalking perpetration and victimization, physical IPV perpetration and victimization, sexual IPV perpetration and victimization, and controlling behaviors) using a meta‐analysis. Data from 188 studies, yielding 382 effect sizes, were used to compare the strength of correlates for IPV victimization versus per…
Factors Associated with Non-Fatal Strangulation Victimization in Intimate Relationships
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a public health crisis across the globe, and one particular act of IPV, non-fatal strangulation, warrants serious attention. Non-fatal strangulation is a risk factor for intimate partner homicide (IPH) and can create long-term negative mental and physical health consequences. In this meta-analysis, we sought to examine factors associated with non-fatal strangulation victimization among women to help inform educa…
Mental and Physical Health Correlates for Emotional Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration and Victimization
Approximately 50% of both men and women will experience emotional intimate partner violence (IPV) in their lifetime—a form of violence highly associated with other forms of IPV—making it important to develop further understanding of for assessment and treatment purposes. The bio-psycho-social model was used to guide the study. Utilizing data from 181 studies, yielding 348 effect sizes, we conducted a meta-analysis examining mental and physical he…

Optimising computer aided detection to identify intra-thoracic tuberculosis on chest x-ray in South African children
Diagnostic tools for paediatric tuberculosis remain limited, with heavy reliance on clinical algorithms which include chest x-ray. Computer aided detection (CAD) for tuberculosis on chest x-ray has shown promise in adults. We aimed to measure and optimise the performance of an adult CAD system, CAD4TB, to identify tuberculosis on chest x-rays from children with presumptive tuberculosis. Chest x-rays from 620 children
Risk Markers for Victimization and Perpetration of Male-to-Female Physical Intimate Partner Violence in Sub-Saharan Africa
Exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) incurs significant public health consequences. Understanding risk markers can accelerate prevention and response efforts, important in settings like Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) where resources are scarce. In this study, four databases were searched to identify studies that examined risk markers for male-to-female physical IPV. With application of the socioecological model, we analyzed 11 risk markers for m…
Evidence for Cenozoic topographic rejuvenation associated with the Laurel Creek Lineament in the Spruce Pine 7.5-minute quadrangle, western North Carolina, USA
Linear fracture systems that strike obliquely to rock units occur across western North Carolina and are associated with Cenozoic topographic rejuvenation of the region. A 2005 earthquake on fractures within one of these systems, the Laurel Creek Lineament, suggests it's an active system. Geologic mapping of the Spruce Pine 7.5-minute quadrangle was conducted to document fault kinematics on this lineament. Near-vertical joints and faults are expos…

Toward a conceptual framework of the acceptability of tuberculosis treatment in children using a theory generative approach
To describe an early-stage holistic framework towards evaluating factors that impact the overall acceptability of TB treatment along the TB care cascade in children. We developed a conceptual framework utilising a theory generative approach. Domains were developed through review of existing definitions and analysis of existing qualitative data undertaken in acceptability studies of TB treatment in children. Clarity of domain definitions was achie…
The utility of chest x-ray and lung ultrasound in the management of infants and children presenting with severe pneumonia in low-and middle-income countries
Background: Chest x-ray (CXR) is commonly used (when available) to support clinical management decisions for child pneumonia and provide a reference standard for diagnosis in research studies. However, its diagnostic and technical limitations for both purposes are well recognised. Recent evidence suggests that lung ultrasound (LUS) may have diagnostic utility in pneumonia. This systematic scoping review of research on the utility of CXR and LUS i…

Single-Parent Adoptions
This Research Digest reviews recent studies of single-parent adoptions. Although there has not been much research to date, no particular problems have emerged in single-parent adoptions compared to two-parent adoptions. There is some evidence that single parents may be better able to handle more disturbed children
Outcomes in Adolescent and Older-Child Adoptions
This column reviews and comments on studies of the outcome of older-child and adolescent adoption. The research demonstrates that children adopted at older ages are more likely to exhibit higher levels of some problem behaviors than children adopted at younger ages. Gender, age and the placement of sibling groups are among the variables that seem to influence outcome
