Efficient geomorphological mapping based on geographic information systems and remote sensing data
We present a detailed geomorphological map (1:5000-scale) of a middle mountainous area in Jena, Germany. To overcome limitations and to extend the possibility of manually digital mapping in a structural way, we propose an approach using geographic information systems (GIS) and high-resolution digital data. The geomorphological map features were extracted by manually interpreting and analyzing the combination of different data sources using light …
Evaluating the effectiveness of hazard mapping as climate change adaptation for community planning in degrading permafrost terrain
Permafrost in northern Canada is susceptible to degradation due to rapid climate change, with hazard mapping promoted as an important activity to guide sustainable community adaptation and planning. This paper presents a framework for evaluating permafrost mapping exercises designed to inform climate change adaptation actions. We apply the framework using a case study of the Incorporating Climate Change into Land Development-Terrain Analysis proj…
Glaciated valleys in Europe and western Asia
In recent years, remote sensing, morphometric analysis, and other computational concepts and tools have invigorated the field of geomorphological mapping. Automated interpretation of digital terrain data based on impartial rules holds substantial promise for large dataset processing and objective landscape classification. However, the geomorphological realm presents tremendous complexity and challenges in the translation of qualitative descriptio…
Spatial distribution of sediment storage types in two glacier landsystems (Pasterze & Obersulzbachkees, Hohe Tauern, Austria)
For the first time, geomorphological maps of the Obersulzbachkees (ca. 28 km2) and the Pasterze (ca. 39.7 km2) glacier landsystem at the catchment scale (1:10,000 and 1:12,500) are presented and the distribution of sediment storage types and (sub)recent sediment transfer processes are quantified and discussed. Special attention is drawn to the activity and function of sediment storages within the sediment cascade and on process (de)coupling of th…
Spatial and temporal variability of sediment transfer and storage in an Alpine basin (Reintal valley, Bavarian Alps, Gemany)
This paper focuses in particular on clastic sediment fluxes on talus slopes. Using orthophoto interpretation, field measurements and GIS-techniques, a quantification of areas and volumes of active sediment transfer related to specific landform units was achieved for different spatial scales. Closer investigation of a single landform complex, more specifically a talus sheet/ debris cone-complex, brought to light that remobilisation can overbalance…
Linking geomorphic systems theory and remote sensing
Although the global importance of high mountains is increasingly being recognised, their geomorphic process System has not been completely understood as yet. While Systems theory and geographical information Systems (GIS) approaches have been long-serving in alpine geomorphology, the implementation of remote sensing (RS) tools is still rare. However, objeet-oriented image analysis lends itself to alpine applications, as it unites the benefits of …
