  • Jail incarceration across the U.S

    Open Access•Sarah Walton, L Lobao et al.•ARTICLE•Punishment & Society•2025•References: 12

Social scientists have highlighted jail incarceration as an important social problem in the United States. However, few national-level generalizable studies have investigated how the characteristics of communities and their local governments influence jail incarceration, despite jails being an intrinsically community-level institution largely run by county governments. In this paper, we ask how place-based community characteristics, particularly …

  • Post-little ice age glacial geomorphology of contrasting topographic settings at Skálafellsjökull, southeast Iceland

Open Access•Sarah Walton, Robert D Storrar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2024

Glacial geomorphological mapping from the southern margin of Skálafellsjökull, southeast Iceland, depicts a topographically diverse mountainside, influencing glacier dynamics, landform formation and glacier retreat since the Little Ice Age maximum in ∼1890. The glacial landforms present are typical of southeast Icelandic temperate glaciers, comprising recessional push moraines, including sawtooth moraines, and associated fluting. Study area A dem…

  • One Nation Under Attack

To answer this question, I conducted a frame analysis of an anti-Muslim mobilization in Aberdeen, SD from 2016–2017. I analyzed the content of public meetings during this period (n = 8), the public Facebook posts…

  • The Paine College Children's Library

Ruth L Bartholomew, Sarah Walton•ARTICLE•The Journal of Negro Education•1939

It is generally admitted among educators that Southern children, and in particular Negro children, are greatly handicapped because they have done so little reading. Most of them have grown up in homes which could not afford books; and which, in many cases, had no appreciation for the value of reading. Few of the public schools have any book collections. The teachers, having never read much themselves, know how to use only the textbook and think t…
