  • The features of visual models generated by primary school students in an online learning platform

Jina Chang, Jisun Park et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Science…•2026

The purpose of this study is to identify the features of student-generated visual models in an online learning platform. To this end, online-based learning activities were designed and applied to 123 primary school students. Specifically, the students were guided to generate visual models for three phenomena related to light and shadow, following three steps: (1) observing a phenomenon in a video and constructing the first visual model of the phe…

  • Teachers’ pedagogical reasoning and actions in customising curriculum resources

Jina Chang, Aik‐ling Tan et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Science…•2025

This study identifies how teachers customise curriculum resources during inquiry activities in primary science lessons with different classroom contexts. We specifically focused on teachers’ pedagogical reasoning and actions in selecting and organising resources from the perspective of the Refined Consensus Model of Pedagogical Content Knowledge (RCM-PCK). Based on a total of 15 lessons taught by five teachers, several types of data were collecte…

  • How students develop collaborative drawing to represent the transmission of sound

Jina Chang, Joonhyeong Park et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the Learning Sciences•2024

Background To support collaborative drawing, it is essential to investigate how students make collaborative drawings and how these contribute to elaborating their ideas. This study examines how 5th and 6th grade students’ group drawings contributed to increased levels of explanations of their drawings about sound transmission. Methods We analyzed two cases of group drawing processes, that showed a large difference in the explanatory levels in thei…

  • Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder among children of immigrants

Jina Chang, Yeonjung Jane Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity and Health•2023•References: 4

Using a nationally representative sample of children, we find that the likelihood of having ADHD increases with higher generations, detecting differences in ADHD prevalence by immigration generation. Importantly, first-generation children had a significantly lower risk of having ADHD conditions compared to second-generation children and children of US-born parents, regardless of family socio-economic status. Public health policy and program devel…

  • Features of and representational strategies in instructional videos for primary science classes

Joonhyeong Park, Jina Chang et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Science…•2022

Utilisation of instructional videos for science teaching has become more widespread due to the expansion of online teaching and learning environments and growing awareness of benefits of videos, such as enabling use of effective multiple representations. With this in mind, this study aimed to examine features of instructional videos for teaching scientific inquiry, a key element of science education, and learners’ engagement, a crucial issue in i…

  • Plan‐Draw‐Evaluate (PDE) pattern in students' collaborative drawing

    Open Access•Joonhyeong Park, Kok‐sing Tang et al.•ARTICLE•Science Education•2021

The use of group drawing to promote student‐generated representation is a common instructional strategy as it combines the benefits of using visual representation and collaborative talk. Although the affordances of group drawing have increasingly been emphasized in science education, few studies have investigated how drawing as a visual mode interacts with group discourse as a verbal mode as well as how that interaction facilitates the developmen…

  • The features of norms formed in constructing student-generated drawings to explain physics phenomena

Jina Chang, Joonhyeong Park et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Science…•2020

Student-generated drawing is a useful strategy to construct students’ scientific ideas. For exploring ways to support student-generated drawing, we focused on the perspective of ‘Norms’ – shared behaviour patterns desirable in a community. We investigated what norms were formed and how they emerged when students made drawings to explain phenomena. Data were collected from classroom observations, interviews and students’ artefacts from five physic…

  • Sequential patterns of students’ drawing in constructing scientific explanations

Joonhyeong Park, Jina Chang et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Science…•2020

The purpose of this study is to investigate the process of students’ construction of scientific explanations through drawing explanatory diagrams. For this, we observed fifth and sixth graders’ drawing processes in a gifted science class involving learning physics concepts in mechanics. The analysis was carried out on three pictorial representational levels: sensory (e.g. observed materials), unseen substance (e.g. molecules) and unseen non-subst…

  • Parental Work Schedules and Child Overweight or Obesity

    Open Access•Daniel P Miller, Jina Chang•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 46

The authors used longitudinal data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 5,482) to investigate whether maternal and paternal work schedules affect child overweight or obesity. They took the novel step of examining whether this effect is consistent for children living in different family structures. Findings from child fixed effects models suggest that the probability of child overweight or obesity was higher for children living…
