During the study period, ZNFPC clinics and community-based distributors provided 3,269 new clients with modern family planning methods. More than half of the women were under the age of 25 years and had fewer than three living children. When asked why they were initiating the use of modern contr…
Perceptions of Family Planning among Rural Kenyan Women
In this paper, 1981 survey data on the perceptions of family planning, and the family planning program of a sample of 1339 rural Kenyan women are examined. In spite of reasonable levels of family planning knowledge and approval, as well as generally favorable perceptions of family planning program goals, little contraceptive use was observed. High levels of desired fertility (average woman desired 8.00 children, male: 8.66 children) and the succe…
Prospects for Fertility Decline in Rural Kenya
Prospects for the onset of fertility decline in Kenya are examined in the light of Caldwells wealth flows theory of fertility transition. Data on lineal and lateral wealth flows and levels of emotional nucleation obtained from a sample of 836 rural male household heads were used for this purpose. The findings suggest a net parental advantage in intergenerational wealth flow exchange with offspring. Limited levels of emotional nucleation were also…

In this paper based on data from a 1977-78 national fertility survey women stating a desire for fewer than 6 children who had ever used efficient contraception were considered while those desiring 6 or more children who had never used an efficient method were classified as traditional. Among ever married women 4.4 and 67.6% fell in the modern and traditional categories respectively. The remaining women either desired fewer than 6 children without…

An Analysis of Weber's Work on Charisma
The present paper examines Weber's work on charisma from the original formulation in Economy and Socaety1 to the Enal statement in the essay on 'Politics as a Vocation'.2 Both the intended meaning of charisma in the earlier formulation and the uses and limitations of the new formulation are discussed. The paper concludes with some observations on the place of charisma in Weber's ethical and intellectual life. THE THEORY OF CHARISMA In Weber's ori…

Municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash was treated with specially designed dry and wet treatment processes, obtaining high quality bottom ash granulate fractions (BGF) suitable for up to 100% replacement of natural gravel in concrete. The wet treatment (using only water for separating and washing) significantly lowers the leaching of e.g. chloride and sulfate, heavy metals (antimony, molybdenum and copper) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC…

Fertility and Family Planning in Africa
As the result of recent demographic research, we now have a reasonable basis for estimating rates of birth, death, and population growth in subSaharan Africa. These findings suggest that fertility is higher, and mortality lower, than had previously been assumed. This combination of high fertility and declining mortality implies a high rate of population growth. The compatibility of such a growth rate with existing plans for social and economic de…

The Theory of Charisma
SINCE ITS first systematic treatment by Max Weber in Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft in the early twenties, the concept of charisma** has been of only limited use to the social sciences. This is so because of fundamental disagreement concerning its meaning and application. In response to this, the present paper offers (1) a brief examination of Weber's contribution, (2) a critical analysis of this position based in part on the recent literature, and …

The Role of Charisma in Modern African Development
Weber's theory of charisma is applied to the pre- and post-independence periods in selected African countries. Charismatic patterns are found to be functional in the independence movement and dysfunctional in meeting the subsequent problems of social, political and economic development. Institutionalization rather than charisma is seen as the more useful approach to the present and future problems of nation-building

Optimism, Physique and Social Class in Reaction to Disability
Social Class and Reaction to Physical Disability

It was hypothesized that this reaction would be conditioned by the relative emphasis attached to physique, and that this emphasis varied inversely with social class level, that is, the lower class would be expected to react more severely to physical impairment than would the middle class. Information was obtained on the families' defin…
