Family Life Education Revisited
What I Have Learned about Family Life
When I accepted the invitation to write on the topic of what I have learned about family life, I had no idea it would be so difficult to produce a personal statement that would be broadly meaningful yet succinct. Part of the difficulty, I'm sure comes in trying to be personal yet not too personal, to be revealing yet not vulnerable, to be honest and straightforward and at the same time socially and professionally acceptable. Part of the difficult…

Parenting--Challenge and Commitment
The presidential message, it has always seemed to me, should be full of insight, wisdom, and provocative thinking, and, of course, should speak to the theme of the annual program. Although this one will not meet all these specifications, it is, primarily, about NCFR and is designed to be both informational and, hopefully, inspirational. Informational because there has been a lot of behind-the-scenes work going on in NCFR for the last several year…

Children: A Factor in Marital Satisfaction
In order to see what effect, if any, children had on marital satisfaction, an analysis was made of 80 couples who had previously been identified as or in their marriages. It was found that children were given as one of the greatest and the only satisfactions in the marriages of the unsatisfied group; companionship was reliably related to satisfied couples when compared with unsatisfied. It may be inferred that while satisfied couples found their …

Sex Education and an In-Service Training Program
This account of a family life institute illustrates an approach by one university to in-service training at the graduate level. Objectives scope content personnel procedures and evaluation are described. Although the focus here was on sex education a similar pattern might have been followed for exploring other critical areas. can be interpreted by an experienced teacher in a way that is consonant with the fullest exploration of every topic. Moreover, administrators have begun to cooperate in this.8 However, it would be instructive for present and future educators in the family field to examine the degree of distrust of the teacher built into some of the syllabi. Will this distrust diminish as the more extended programs of adult education (parents, administrators, teac…

Number of Years Married as Related to Personality Perception and Marital Satisfaction
The relationship between marital satisfaction, perception of self and spouse, and number of years married was investigated by correlating the scores of 80 married couples on the Locke Marital Adjustment Scale and the Interpersonal Check List after approximately eight years of marriage. It was found that the longer couples were married, the less favorable personality qualities they saw in their mates. This was true for the couples who found their …

Marital Satisfaction and Personality Correlates of Spouse
Eighty married couples rated their marital satisfaction on Locke's Marital Adjustment Scale and described their spouses by checking descriptive phrases on the Interpersonal Check List. These two sets of scores were correlated and studied in order to determine what, if any, relationship existed between satisfaction in marriage and the social perception subjects had of their spouses. It was concluded that dissatisfied persons described their spouse…
Family Goals in a Democratic Society
The method of character education employed by the Communists, their system of developing socialist morality, and their childrearing practices are reviewed and commented upon in the light of practices and standards prevalent in the United States. The tremendous social problems that are confronting us present the greatest challenge that humanity has ever faced. These problems must be solved by individuals who have learned to live responsibly in a d…
