Ten Days a ’Grass Widow’ - Forty-eight Hours a Wife: Sexual Division of Labour in Trawlermen’s Households
A strict dichotomy of gender and work roles has long characterized the offshore trawler fishery. Men’s constantly varying work period, about ten days sea time to every forty-eight hours ashore, forces wives to become reluctant matriarchs, a role they must drop when their husbands land. Incongruity of expectations and behaviour is thus built in. Successful adjustment to sea-time roles by both is often dysfunctional to family stability, and to the …
Perceived Corruption, Trust, and Interviewer Behavior in 26 European Countries
Identifying illicit behavior in survey research is inherently problematic, since self-reports are untrustworthy. We argue that fraudulent interviewers can, however, be identified through statistical deviance of the distributional parameters of their interviews. We document that a high proportion of the variation in the data is due to the interviewer. In addition, we show that the incidence of interviewer-induced anomalies is strongly associated w…

The Pursuit of Postsecondary Education: A Comparison of First Nations, African, Asian, and European Canadian Youth

Cultural Centrality and Information and Communication Technology among Canadian Youth
This paper examines the positions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis (FNIM) peoples and visible minorities as distances from the cultural “centre” of White European culture. It then assesses the relation of information and communication technology (ICT) to these locations among Canadian youth using three data sets: the 2001 Aboriginal Peoples Survey, the 2000 Youth in Transition Survey (older cohort) and its 2002 follow–up, and a 2004/2005 survey …
Digital Divides and Capital Conversion: The optimal use of information and communication technology for youth reading achievement
Analysis of a nationally representative survey of 15-year-old Canadian youth indicates how capital can be converted from one form to another by examining the use of information and communication technology (ICT) and reading achievements. Overall there is a negligible linear relationship but a pronounced curvilinear one between these variables, suggesting an optimal level of ICT use. This optimal point varies by gender (males are able to use ICT m…

Beyond the Digital Divide in Canadian Schools: From Access to Competency in the Use of Information Technology
This article provides a descriptive analysis of issues related to the access and use of information and communication technology (ICT) among Canadian youth. In particular, it examines the extent to which inequities in the use of and access to ICT exist among Canadian high school students based on gender, socioeconomic status, and rural-urban location. The analyses suggest that there is a digital divide for Canadian youth in access to and experien…
The Social Distribution of Youth's Images of Work
Methodological Artifacts in Measures of Political Efficacy and Trust: A Multiple Correspondence Analysis
Many authors report a positive relationship of education and political interest with political efficacy and trust, but it is well known that both of the former are associated with response styles, such as a tendency to “strongly agree.” Since they are related to both a substantive concept (political efficacy and trust), and to methodological effects (agreement bias and a tendency to give non-substantive responses) it is important to assess whethe…
The Persistence of Social Structure: Cohort, Class and Gender Effects on the Occupational Aspirations and Expectations of Canadian Youth
From a rational action perspective, one might predict that the occupational aspirations and expectations of Canadian youth would have declined between the 1970s and the 1990s as the youth labour market deteriorated. Whether or not such a shift in the level of occupational goals was observed, a late modernity analysis would predict that social class, gender, and urban-rural residence would become less prominent determinants of aspirations and expe…

The Veiled Crew: An Exploratory Study of Wives' Reported and Desired Contributions to Coastal Fisheries Enterprises in Northern Norway and Nova Scotia
This paper explores the fit between the reported and the desired contributions of wives to household small boat fishing enterprises. The research employed a double comparative design: 1) a regional comparison of fisheries-dependent households in North Norway and Nova Scotia, and 2) a dyadic gender comparison of the viewpoints of wives and husbands. Our findings reveal several patterns. First, wives in both regions participate substantially in the…
Recruitment to small boat fishing and public policy in the Atlantic Canadian fisheries

On Spitting Against the Wind: Organizational Precariousness and American Irreligion
This is an analysis of a small-town Wisconsin free-thought movement and its response to organizational dilemmas arising out of its irreligion. More particularly, it is an analysis of organization demise. The study isolates a number of variables which help to account for the movemet's history. Several relate to the community context such as vertical and horizontal differentiation. Others concern characteristics of the organization itself, includin…
