  • The Sasanian Fire Temple of Gach Dawar in Western Iran: New Evidence

    Yousef Moradi, Edward J Keall•ARTICLE•Iran•2019•References: 8

In 1978 a Canadian archaeological mission conducted one season of excavation at the fire temple of Gach Dawar with the main focus of the operation on four ancillary rooms added to the exterior of the main Chahar Taq. The programme was terminated in 1979 by the onset of the Iranian revolution. The new excavation in 2007 re-examined the rooms originally exposed by the Canadian mission, as well as working in the heart of the Chahar Taq and other adj…

  • Lead Isotope Analyses of Bronze Age Copper‐base Artefacts From Al‐midamman, Yemen: Towards the Identification of an Indigenous Metal Production and Exchange System in the Southern Red Sea Region

    Open Access•Lauren Weeks, Edward J Keall et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2009•Cited by: 6•References: 28

The results of the lead isotope analysis (LIA) of 15 copper‐base artefacts from the Bronze Age site of al‐Midamman, Yemen, are reported. The LIA data suggest the existence of an indigenous Bronze Age metal production and exchange system centred on the southern Red Sea region, distinct from those in neighbouring regions of Arabia and the Levant. These preliminary results are highly significant for the archaeology of the region, suggesting that loc…

  • The changing positions of Zabîd's Red Sea port sites

    Open Access•Edward J Keall•ARTICLE•Chroniques yéménites•2008

for production of a particular ceramic type is often simply its presence in abundant frequencies. The fundamental assumption underlying this attribution is entirely unsatisfactory. Indeed, if comparison is made with medieval pottery production in the Saintonge region of France, where luxury wares are known to be produced, but are rarely found,1 then the opposite conclusion could equally be obtained. Very rarely can one find in the literature hard…

  • Provenance of local ceramic industry and the characterization of imports: Petrography of pottery from medieval Yemen

    Open Access•Robert B Mason, Edward J Keall•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1988•Cited by: 5•References: 6

Recognition of distinctive ceramics by visual inspection is the norm in surface survey - especially when ceramic types are as varied and colourful as those of Islamic medieval pottery. Here petrographic analysis is used successfully to define the ceramic categories and the contributions of local and imported wares

  • The dynamics of Zabid and its hinterland: The survey of a town on the Tihamah plain of North Yemen

    Edward J Keall•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•1983•Cited by: 5•References: 2

The Royal Ontario Museum Zabid project began in 1982 with its focus upon the town of Zabid on the central Tihamah plain of North Yemen (Yemen Arab Republic). Using sherd counts collected from field surveys, the project has been successful in establishing a working typology for the pottery found in the area of Zabid and in the surrounding 2,500 square kilometres. On that basis, some preliminary hypotheses regarding the settlement patterns from the…

    Edward J Keall•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Oriental…•1975

It is hypothesized that the sudden but short-lived explosion of investment and building activity in Babylonia during the late Parthian period is reflected in a microcosm at Nippur. The impetus for the activity was Vologases I's desire to secure greater control over international trade by curbing the expansionist policies of Characene. Rome also had desires to control the trade and this was the main motive behind Trajan's invasion of Parthia in A.…
