  • The Impact of Being Labeled as a Persistently Lowest Achieving School

Guan Saw, Barbara Schneider et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Education•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 23

Since the No Child Left Behind Act was enacted, grading and labeling of schools as low performing have been increasingly used as means to incentivize failing schools to raise student achievement. Using statewide high school data from Michigan, our regression discontinuity analyses show that the bottom 5% of schools identified as persistently lowest achieving (PLA), which is publicly announced and has consequential accountability, increased their …

  • Dollars, Distinction, or Duty? The Meaning of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards for Teachers’ Work and Collegial Relations

Dorothea Anagnostopoulos, Dorothea M Anagnostopoulos et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Education•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 17

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) is the most prominent contemporary effort to professionalize teaching. Along with identifying exceptional teachers, the NBPTS seeks to alter teachers’ work by establishing a cadre of expert teachers capable of and obligated to leading school improvement efforts. This article reports findings from a mixed methods study of teachers’ responses to the NBPTS in four urban elementary school…

  • Sizing up Peers

Open Access•Anna S Mueller, Jennifer Pearson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•2010•Cited by: 26•References: 34

Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health and multi-level modeling, we examine the role of social comparison with schoolmates in adolescent girls' weight control. Specifically, we focus on how girls' own weight control is influenced by the body sizes and weight-control behaviors of their schoolmates. Our findings suggest that comparisons with similar others (in this case, girls of a similar body size) appear to have the strongest…

  • Analyzing Teachers’ Professional Interactions in a School as Social Capital

Open Access•W R Penuel, William Penuel et al.•ARTICLE•Teachers College Record The Voice…•2009

Background/Context Researchers have proposed a number of lenses for analyzing teacher professional communities in recent years. These lenses have been useful in describing key dynamics of professional communities; however, none provides a compelling approach to how to integrate data from the school as a whole with case study data on individual interactions to create a coherent account of the structure and dynamics of teacher professional communit…

  • Indices of Robustness for Sample Representation

    Open Access•K A Frank, Kenneth Frank et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Methodology•2007•Cited by: 4•References: 9

Social scientists are rarely able to gather data from the full range of contexts to which they hope to generalize (Shadish, Cook, and Campbell 2002). Here we suggest that debates about the generality of causal inferences in the social sciences can be informed by quantifying the conditions necessary to invalidate an inference. We begin by differentiating the target population into two sub-populations: a potentially observed subpopulation from whic…

  • Parents' Union Dissolution and Adolescents' School Performance

Open Access•Michelle L Frisco, Chandra Muller et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2007•Cited by: 40•References: 41

We use data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health and the Adolescent Health and Academic Achievement Study to estimate how parents' union dissolution influences changes in adolescents' mathematics course work gains, overall grade point average, and course failure rates during a window of approximately 1 year (N =2,629). A primary purpose of this study is demonstrating the utility of propensity score matching techniques for stu…

  • The Pilgrimage

    Open Access•Adil Özdemir, K A Frank et al.•CHAPTER•Visible Islam in Modern Turkey•2000

The term‘pilgrim age’, hajj, in Islam means a sacramental visit to the city of Mecca, the native city of the Prophet Muhammad, in Saudi Arabia. The pilgrimage occurs at a prescribed point in the Islamic year. Over a period of several days, pilgrims in Mecca conduct many ritual acts which prominently include circumambulating a cubical structure known as the Kaaba and maintaining a presence, or ‘standing’, on the nearby plain of Arafat. The pilgrim…
