  • Grandparents

    Gregory E Kennedy, Carroll E Kennedy•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•1993

Responses to measures of relationship quality and range of activity with their grandparents by young adult grandchil- dren from stepfamilies (n = 55) were different from responses of young adult grandchildren from single-parent (n = 70) and intact families (n = 266). Analysis of variance comparisons revealed sig- nificant differences with grandchildren from intact families having the lowest scores, grandchildren from single-parent families in the…

  • Shared Activities of Grandparents and Grandchildren

    Open Access•Gregory E Kennedy•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1992

Responses of 391 young adult grandchildren to a list of 29 activities gave empirical support to the usefulness of the list by indicating the extent to which each activity was characteristic of their relationship with their most-close grandparent. Analyses of variance indicated the influence of 7 independent variables on the rating of the activities. Information from the study could provide a context to assist in considering the meaning of specifi…

  • British and American Attitudes toward Family Relationships

    Open Access•Deems M Brooks, Gregory E Kennedy•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1989

Responses of students in a London university and a midwestern American university to measures of family dynamics yielded significant differences in attitudes toward their families. Although the Americans were more likely to come from divorced families, they were also more likely than the British to describe their families as satisfying, cohesive, and adaptable. The British students were more likely to anticipate cohabitation before marriage. Both…

  • College Students' Relationships with Grandparents

    Open Access•Gregory E Kennedy•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1989

Literature on the role and attitudes of grandparents is increasing, even as is the number of grandparents. However, data on the attitudes of grandchildren toward their grandparents are spare. This article reports attitudes of 574 college students toward their grandparents. Their geographic closeness to at least one grandparent, and their patterns and motivations for contacting their grandparents are included

  • Middleborns' Perceptions of Family Relationships

    Open Access•Gregory E Kennedy•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1989

Responses of 657 college students of both sexes to questions about family relationships showed significant differences between 185 middleborn children and 472 children in other birth order positions. These differences support findings of prior studies of adolescents and children, suggesting that middleborns feel less parental support than other children. A significantly higher percent of middleborn students indicated that they received no parenta…
