Using Stakeholder Engagement to Build Cancer Survivorship Care Coordination Capacity Between Primary and Oncology Care
Introduction: Cancer survivors experience gaps in access to timely and well-coordinated care. We describe stakeholder engagement activities across a university-based comprehensive cancer center and a primary care-focused federally qualified health center, which informed implementation and sustainability of community-focused cancer care coordination interventions to optimize care for underserved cancer patients in specialty and primary care. Metho…
Enhancing agency and empowerment in agricultural development projects: A synthesis of mixed methods impact evaluations from the Gender, Agriculture, and Assets Project, Phase 2 (Gaap2)
Development interventions increasingly include women's empowerment and gender equality among their objectives, but evaluating their impact has been stymied by the lack of measures that are comparable across interventions. This paper synthesizes the findings of 11 mixed-methods impact evaluations of agricultural development projects from South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa that were part of the Gender, Agriculture, and Assets Project, Phase 2 (GAAP2…

Menus from the Lotos Club in New York City
Several hundred menus from the Lotos Club have been preserved from the period 1870 to the present. They are from so-called "State Dinners" honoring important people. They show in unusual detail and over a considerable period of time the changing tastes in cuisine, from adherence to French haute cuisine standards to the current fashions such as local and seasonal. It is useful to look at the food served at institutions such as clubs because while …

Mentoring health researchers globally: Diverse experiences, programmes, challenges and responses
Mentoring experiences and programmes are becoming increasingly recognised as important by those engaged in capacity strengthening in global health research. Using a primarily qualitative study design, we studied three experiences of mentorship and eight mentorship programmes for early career global health researchers based in high-income and low- and middle-income countries. For the latter, we drew upon programme materials, existing unpublished d…
Using theories of change in the CGIAR Research Program on Agriculture for Nutrition and Health
Theories of change are increasingly being discussed and referenced in development evaluation even while the elements of what a theory of change consist of differ widely among applications. Equally, examples of actual use of theories of change other than as overview illustrations of interventions are rare. In this article, we present generic models of theories of change for both straightforward and more complex interventions. A number of examples …
The Gendered Impacts of Agricultural Asset Transfer Projects: Lessons from the Manica Smallholder Dairy Development Program
This article explores the gendered impacts of a development project that provided dairy training and a superior breed of cattle to households as part of a broader effort to develop a smallholder-friendly, market-oriented dairy value chain in the Manica province of Mozambique. The project first targeted households, registered cows in the names of the household heads, and, initially, trained these cow owners in various aspects of dairy production a…
Gender, assets, and market-oriented agriculture: Learning from high-value crop and livestock projects in Africa and Asia
Strengthening the abilities of smallholder farmers in developing countries, particularly women farmers, to produce for both home and the market is currently a development priority. In many contexts, ownership of assets is strongly gendered, reflecting existing gender norms and limiting women’s ability to invest in more profitable livelihood strategies such as market-oriented agriculture. Yet the intersection between women’s asset endowments and t…
Development of the Primary Care Quality-Homeless (PCQ-H) Instrument: A Practical Survey of Homeless Patients’ Experiences in Primary Care
BACKGROUND: Homeless patients face unique challenges in obtaining primary care responsive to their needs and context. Patient experience questionnaires could permit assessment of patient-centered medical homes for this population, but standard instruments may not reflect homeless patients' priorities and concerns. OBJECTIVES: This report describes (a) the content and psychometric properties of a new primary care questionnaire for homeless patient…
Comparing Homeless Persons’ Care Experiences in Tailored Versus Nontailored Primary Care Programs
Objectives. We compared homeless patients’ experiences of care in health care organizations that differed in their degree of primary care design service tailoring. Methods. We surveyed homeless-experienced patients (either recently or currently homeless) at 3 Veterans Affairs (VA) mainstream primary care settings in Pennsylvania and Alabama, a homeless-tailored VA clinic in California, and a highly tailored non-VA Health Care for the Homeless Pro…

Zombies and Other Problems: Theory and Method in Research on Bilingualism1
After a brief consideration of two perennial theories that have influenced research on bilingualism in American schools, this paper focuses on recent research using the Berko method to study acquisition of the English plural by Spanish-English bilinguals in grades 1 through 10, in San Antonio, Texas. Method and theory in two highly similar studies (Natalicio 1969, and Johnson 1973) are contrasted in detail in an attempt to explain the differences…
