  • Implementation of melodic morphing based on generative theory of tonal music

Open Access•Masatoshi Hamanaka, Keiji Hirata et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2022

This paper proposes a new morphing method to generate a melody, given two melodies represented by time-span trees obtained from the generative theory of tonal music (GTTM). In this paper, we define a feature structure based on a time-span tree and the distance between two structures. Next, we construct a lattice of subsumption relations among these structures and define three algebraic operations: reduction, meet, and join. First, we conduct thes…

  • On Evaluating Systems for Generating Expressive Music Performance

Haruhiro Katayose, Mitsuyo Hashida et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 20

Research into music generation and into emulating human musical competence has attracted much attention in the field of computer science. In general, the results of academic research should be verified by assessing ‘objective effectiveness’, which is often represented by a ‘recognition ratio’. Although ‘objective effectiveness’ is also a requirement for research in music generation, it is meaningless unless subjective requisites are also satisfie…

  • "Implementing "A Generative Theory of Tonal Music

Masatoshi Hamanaka, Keiji Hirata et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2006•Cited by: 4•References: 6

This paper proposes a music analysing system called the automatic time-span tree analyser (ATTA). ATTA derives a time-span tree that assigns a hierarchy of “structural importance” to the notes of a piece of music based on the generative theory of tonal music (GTTM). Although the time-span tree has been applied in music summarization and collaborative music creation systems, these systems use time-span trees manually analysed by experts in musicol…

  • Interactive Music Summarization Based on Generative Theory of Tonal Music

Keiji Hirata, Shu Matsuda•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2003•Cited by: 2

This paper presents an algorithm that checks for melodic similarity and a music summarization system called “Papipuun.” First, we developed a data structure for representing polyphony based on a time-span reduction in the generative theory of tonal music (GTTM) and the deductive object-oriented database (DOOD). A least upper bound operation is introduced to check the similarity of polyphonies represented in our method. Next, Papipuun performs qui…
