  • Commonality and variation in mental representations of music revealed by a cross-cultural comparison of rhythm priors in 15 countries

    Open Access•Nori Jacoby, Rainer Polak et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 105

Music is present in every known society but varies from place to place. What, if anything, is universal to music cognition? We measured a signature of mental representations of rhythm in 39 participant groups in 15 countries, spanning urban societies and Indigenous populations. Listeners reproduced random ‘seed’ rhythms; their reproductions were fed back as the stimulus (as in the game of ‘telephone’), such that their biases (the prior) could be …

  • A study of variability in raga motifs in performance contexts

Kalyan K Ganguli, Preeti Rao•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2021

An interesting aspect of Indian art music is the prominent place of improvisation in performance. We explore the influence of the structural constraints of the genre on raga motifs in the course of improvisation. Audio recordings of North Indian vocal concerts are analysed to extract measurements of the defining parameters of the recurrent melodic phrases that characterise the raga in performance. While improvisation relates to choosing the seque…

  • Factors Constraining Timely Sowing of Wheat as an Adaptation to Climate Change in Eastern India

Danielle Newport, David B Lobell et al.•ARTICLE•Weather, Climate, and Society•2020

Climate change is predicted to negatively impact wheat yields across northern India, primarily as a result of increased heat stress during grain filling at the end of the growing season. One way that farmers may adapt is by sowing their wheat earlier to avoid this terminal heat stress. However, many farmers in the eastern Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) sow their wheat later than is optimal, likely leading to yield reductions. There is limited documen…

  • The impact of agricultural interventions can be doubled by using satellite data

    Open Access•Meha Jain, Balwinder Singh et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Sustainability•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 1

  • On the impact of granularity of space-based urban CO2 emissions in urban atmospheric inversions: A Case Study for Indianapolis, In

Open Access•Tomohiro Oda, Nicholas Parazoo et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2017

Quantifying greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from cities is a key challenge towards effective emissions management. An inversion analysis from the INdianapolis FLUX experiment (INFLUX) project, as the first of its kind, has achieved a top-down emission estimate for a single city using CO2 data collected by the dense tower network deployed across the city. However, city-level emission data, used as a priori emissions, are also a key component in the…

  • Acoustic correlates of focus in Marathi: Production and perception

    Open Access•Preeti Rao, Niramay Sanghvi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Phonetics•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 26

  • Detection of phonemic aspiration for spoken Hindi pronunciation evaluation

    Open Access•Vaishali V Patil, Preeti Rao•ARTICLE•Journal of Phonetics•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 38

  • An Overview of Hindustani Music in the Context of Computational Musicology

Suvarnalata Rao, Preeti Rao•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2014•References: 5

With its origin in the Samveda, composed between 1500–900 BC, the art music of India has evolved through ages and come to be regarded as one of the oldest surviving music systems in the world today. This paper aims to provide an overview of the fundamentals governing Hindustani music (also known as North Indian music) as practiced today. The deliberation will mainly focus on the melodic aspect of music making and will attempt to provide a musicol…

  • Classification of Melodic Motifs in Raga Music with Time-series Matching

Preeti Rao, Joe Cheri Ro et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 9

Ragas are characterized by their melodic motifs or catch phrases that constitute strong cues to the raga identity for both the performer and the listener, and therefore are of great interest in music retrieval and automatic transcription. While the characteristic phrases, or pakads, appear in written notation as a sequence of notes, musicological rules for interpretation of the phrase in performance in a manner that allows considerable creative e…

  • Rāga Recognition based on Pitch Distribution Methods

Gopala Krishna Koduri, Sankalp Gulati et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2012•Cited by: 6•References: 5

Rāga forms the melodic framework for most of the music of the Indian subcontinent. Thus automatic rāga recognition is a fundamental step in the computational modelling of the Indian art-music traditions. In this work, we investigate the properties of rāga and the natural processes by which people identify it. We bring together and discuss the previous computational approaches to rāga recognition correlating them with human techniques, in both Kar…
