  • Resolving the mystery of Chinese developmental dyslexia

Open Access•Lek Hor Tan, Li Hai Tan et al.•ARTICLE•Brain and Language•2026•References: 72

Developmental dyslexia is a specific learning disability for which early identification and intervention are crucial. In alphabetic languages, phonological awareness and letter naming are well-established early markers of reading disorders. For developmental dyslexia in Chinese, a language that differs from alphabetic languages in multiple aspects, little is known about its early markers. Here, we report findings from a 2.5-year longitudinal beha…

  • Developmental differences in generalizable neural representations driven by multiple emotional and cognitive tasks

Lei Hao, Tianwei Xu et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica Sinica•2025

  • The potential transfer effect of musical expertise to auditory verbal working memory

    Open Access•Peixin Nie, Barbara Tillmann et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica•2025•References: 2

Musical expertise has been shown to facilitate verbal working memory (WM) performance, but the findings lacked consistency. Given the overlapped auditory encoding process for language and music, there may be an association between one's native language background and the effects of musical expertise. In the present study, we investigate (1) the effects of musical expertise on verbal WM with different native language backgrounds and (2) the role o…

  • Neural specialization with generalizable representations underlies children’s cognitive development of attention

Lei Hao, Hao Lei et al.•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•2024

From childhood to adulthood, the human brain develops highly specialized yet interacting neural modules that give rise to nuanced attention and other cognitive functions. Each module can specialize over development to support specific functions, yet also coexist in multiple neurobiological modes to support distinct processes. Advances in cognitive neuroscience have conceptualized human attention as a set of cognitive processes anchored in highly …
