Unemployment and Health in Sweden
The unemployment rate for a country seems to reflect unemployment policies rather than economic conditions. Variations in employment rates for selected Western countries are presented as a background for a discussion of unemployment and its individual and societal consequences in Sweden. Unemployment is both a private trouble—where individuals see the possibility of controlling their own lives diminishing, which leads to increased risk for psycho…
Regional variations in cardiovascular mortality in Sweden—Structural vulnerability in the local community
Immune function in unemployed women
Immunologic effects of unemployment were prospectively studied in women over a period of 8 months. Subjects were classified into three groups depending on their employment history, and were studied concomitantly. Group A consisted of unemployed women who were recipients of traditional support from the Swedish welfare state. Group B was composed of unemployed women who were given the opportunity to participate in a psychosocial program, in additio…
Long-term unemployment among women in Sweden
The stress chain
A conceptual core model of the teacher stress process, assumed to be invariant, was tested on longitudinal data. A LISREL analysis confirmed the goodness of fit of the model. Teachers' relations to pupils and teachers' perception of pupils as a stress source result in general strain, and in turn lead to various stress reactions. Teachers who perceive students as stressors at the middle of the first term report general strain and impaired somatic …
The teacher stress process
A cross‐cultural systems analysis was performed on teacher stress data from Canada and Sweden. The LISREL structural analysis was based on a conceptual model adapted from Kyriacou and Sutcliffe. Although the LISREL solution did not reach statistical significance it was concluded that the conceptual model in the essential features was corroborated by the LISREL analyses. Measurement errors, as well as the sensitivity of the used goodness of fit te…
The psychological impact of unemployment
This study used the LISREL methodology to explore important psychological processes in unemployment. The analysis is based on Hepworth's (1980) correlation data from 77 unemployed men. Results indicate that the extent to which a man perceives his time as being occupied or unoccupied affects his subjective well‐being and mental health. There may be a critical period for adaptation to unemployment, occurring soon after job loss. With the passage of…
Teacher stress
The present paper introduces a conceptual model of teacher stress, two data sets are employed to discover variables relevant to the model, and the interrelationships between the variables are studied through a structural equations method, LISREL. A pupil‐related stressor is shown to be the most important antecedent to a state of general strain, mental disorders, and psychosomatic symptoms. The role of time‐ and management‐related stressors is mor…
The Mediation of Attitudes by Speech in Dyadic Conversations
In this study, the relationships among personality characteristics, speech characteristics, and evaluative attitudes were investigated in dyadic conversations between peers. In previous research, it has been proposed that long utterances from a speaker in a conversation is perceived by the listener as expressing a positive attitude. Furthermore, a positive relationship between cognitive variables and utterance length has been found. While the lat…
