Flight-intensive practices and wellbeing
This article draws on social practice theory and wellbeing perspectives to outline a research framework for the study of flight-intensive practices. The framework is then used to discuss, through a non-systematic review, the social science air travel literature and to propose avenues for future research. We study both the work and leisure domains, with sub-cases for travel in academia and visiting family and friends. We find insights of a complex…
Complexity and interdependence in local mineral extraction planning
The Green Transition demands mineral extraction. The importance for Europe to gain independence from China within this area is also high on the political agenda, which has resulted in a renewal of interest in mineral-extraction in the Nordic countries, including Norway. Despite the increasing demand at the global, European and national level, the planning process itself though takes place at the local level, raising issues of complexities, contra…
Ethnonationalism in post-war Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo The effects of local violence and ethnic composition
In this article we examine attitudes of ethnonationalism in two countries that have experienced ethnic civil war: Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo. We analyse the strength of attitudes of ethnonationalism on the individual level, and how ethnonationalism is related to local ethnic settlement patterns and previous experiences of local inter-ethnic violence. We combine data at the municipality level with data from the South-East European Social Survey…
Bringing Religion into International Relations
Toward a Revival of Religion and Religious Clashes
In recent years several scholars claim to see a religious revival resulting in a resurgence of religious clashes. To what extent do these claims have validity? This article tries to answer this question by focusing on the importance of religion as a source of identity as well as a source of conflict for people, both over time and across cultures. Based on survey data from the World Value Surveys (WVS) as well as the Uppsala Conflict database, thi…
Colorful Community or Ethnic Witches' Brew
This article investigates the relationship between multiethnicity and domestic conflict from 1946 to 1992. Multiethnicity is measured by the size of the largest ethnic group, the number of ethnic groups, the size of the largest ethnic minority group, and ethnic affinities to groups outside the country. Although ethnic heterogeneity is expected to stimulate conflict, other factors may alleviate ethnic tension. Moreover, most countries are heteroge…
Beyond Environmental Scarcity
A great deal of recent writing has indicated that growing scarcities of renewable resources can contribute to conflict. Most of this research, however, suffers from two major methodological weaknesses: lack of variation in the independent and dependent variables, and the absence of control for other conflict-generating factors. As one of the first large- N studies of the relationship between environmental degradation and domestic armed conflict, …
