  • Civilian militia formation and protection against rebel violence: Evidence from Nigeria

    Open Access•Imrana Buba, Jana Krause•ARTICLE•Political Geography•2026•References: 51

Why do some civilian defense militias effectively protect civilians while others fail and seem to only exacerbate rebel violence against civilians? Many irregular civil wars involve civilian defense militias, i.e., informal civilian groups that cooperate with the state military to protect their communities. Despite a burgeoning literature on militias in civil wars, research on variation in militia emergence and protective effects remains limited.…

  • Contrasting marine phytoplankton responses to meltwater inputs from Arctic and Antarctic glaciers revealed by bioassay experiments

Open Access•Mark J Hopwood, Jana Krause et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2025

Along the coastal periphery of the Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets, global warming has increased freshwater discharge and associated fluxes of terrigenous material from the cryosphere into the ocean. Shifts in the availability of light and bio-accessible nitrogen, phosphorous, silica, iron, manganese, and cobalt can influence seasonal patterns of marine primary production. Yet the spatial and temporal scales of changes to these drivers from oc…

  • Ceasefires and Civilian Protection Monitoring in Myanmar

    Open Access•Jana Krause, Erin M Kamler et al.•ARTICLE•Global Studies Quarterly•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 5

Civilian ceasefire and civilian protection monitoring are often seen as innovative peacekeeping and protection mechanisms in conflict zones difficult to access for international actors. However, the literature on civilian monitoring and its impact is sparse. In many conflicts, civilians organize to protect themselves. Research into civilian agency and protection has shown that civilian capacity to self-protect and conflict conditions determine wh…

  • The ethics of ethnographic methods in conflict zones

    Open Access•Jana Krause•ARTICLE•Journal of Peace Research•2021•Cited by: 29•References: 50

This article examines the ethics of using ethnographic methods in contemporary conflict zones. Ethnographic research is an embodied research practice of immersion within a field site whereby researchers use ethnographic sensibility to study how people make sense of their world. Feminist, conflict and peacebuilding scholars who research vulnerable populations and local dynamics especially value ethnographic approaches for their emphasis on context…

  • Restrained or constrained? Elections, communal conflicts, and variation in sexual violence

    Open Access•Jana Krause•ARTICLE•Journal of Peace Research•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 45

Anecdotal evidence suggests that sexual violence varies significantly across cases of election violence and communal conflicts but systematic research is scarce. Post-election violence is particularly likely if electoral mobilization further polarizes longstanding communal conflicts and political elites do not instruct security forces to intervene decisively. I comparatively analyse two prominent cases of post-election violence in Kenya (2007/8) …

  • Stabilization and Local Conflicts: Communal and Civil War in South Sudan

    Open Access•Jana Krause•ARTICLE•Ethnopolitics•2019•Cited by: 14•References: 13

Scholars have long argued that local conflicts need to be integrated into the analysis of civil war and peacebuilding. Yet, systematic research of the linkages between communal violence and civil war is sparse. This contribution connects communal violence research to the stabilization and peacekeeping debate. To further a more systematic analysis of communal conflicts, I distinguish various types and their linkages to civil war and peacebuilding.…

  • Gender Dimensions of (Non)Violence in Communal Conflict: The Case of Jos, Nigeria

    Open Access•Jana Krause•ARTICLE•Comparative Political Studies•2019•Cited by: 14•References: 42

Peacebuilding is more likely to succeed in countries with higher levels of gender equality, but few studies have examined the link between subnational gender relations and local peace and, more generally, peacebuilding after communal conflict. This article addresses this gap. I examine gender relations and (non)violence in ethno-religious conflict in the city of Jos in central Nigeria. Jos and its rural surroundings have repeatedly suffered commu…

  • Resilient Communities: Non-Violence and Civilian Agency in Communal War

    Open Access•Jana Krause•BOOK•Resilient Communities•2018

"In Resilient Communities, Jana Krause focuses on civilian agency and mobilization 'from below' and explains violence and non-violence in communal wars"

  • Women’s Participation in Peace Negotiations and the Durability of Peace

Jana Krause, Werner Krause et al.•ARTICLE•International Interactions•2018•Cited by: 87•References: 19

There is an emerging consensus that women’s participation in peace negotiations contributes to the quality and durability of peace after civil war. However, to date, this proposition has remained empirically untested. Moreover, how women’s participation may contribute to durable peace has not been systematically explored. This article uses a mixed method design to examine this proposition. Our statistical analysis demonstrates a robust correlatio…

  • Non-Violence and Civilian Agency in Communal War: Evidence from Jos, Nigeria

    Jana Krause•ARTICLE•African Affairs•2016•Cited by: 1

Communal violence is one of the deadliest forms of political violence in Nigeria. Research has yet to identify and explain the variation in spread and intensity of violence ‘within’ communal conflicts. This article analyses violence and non-violence in two almost contiguous neighbourhoods located in the city of Jos in central Nigeria that share ethnic, religious, and socio-economic similarities. It shows that structural factors such as geography,…

  • Global and Local Policy Responses to the Resource Trap

Gilles Carbonnier, Fritz Brugger et al.•ARTICLE•Global Governance A Review of…•2011•Cited by: 2

This article examines the most significant international policy responses that seek to address the resource trap and spur development in resource-rich, but fragile states. It applies a regime theoretical framework to assess recent multistakeholder initiatives within the extractive sector by focusing on the processes through which they seek to alter the behavior of public and private organizations. Based on a review of the Nigerian and Azeri cases…
