  • Phonetic development in late childhood

Open Access•Josiane Riverin-Coutlée, Enkeleida Kapia et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•2026

This study is concerned with Albanian children speaking a nonstandard dialect who learn Standard Albanian (SA) in primary school. Our main research question is whether the phonetic characteristics of these children's first dialect are influenced by their learning of SA. We followed longitudinally 48 children in 1st, 2nd, and 5th grades (24 girls, 24 boys, 6-11 years old), some of whom grew up in a village, the others in a city. A picture-naming t…

  • Value in primary care

Open Access•Ana Valéria Carneiro Dias, Gonçalo Santinha et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Background: the global healthcare landscape is shifting towards a paradigm of value-based care, emphasizing patient outcomes, efficiency, and patient-centeredness. Portugal is ready to embrace this transformation, especially with the generalization of the model of formal integration of primary care with hospital care, the Local Health Unit (ULS). Primary health care (PHC) in Portugal, recognized for its robustness in European comparisons, today f…

  • Vowel Nasalization and The Path to Sound Change

Open Access•Jonathan Harrington, Conceição Cunha et al.•ARTICLE•Language•2025•References: 92

A central task in sound change research is to account for the emergence of new phonological categories from patterns of synchronic phonetic variation. To this end, a comparison was made of two English dialects differing in their phonologization of coarticulatory vowel nasalization using real-time magnetic resonance imaging of the velum and tongue and their synchronization with the glottal signal. This was done for coda vowel-nasal (VN) sequences …

  • The physiological basis of the phonologization of vowel nasalization

    Open Access•Conceição Cunha, Phil Hoole et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Phonetics•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 72

The diachronic change by which coarticulatory nasalization increases in VN (vowel-nasal) sequences has been modelled as an earlier alignment of the velum combined with oral gesture weakening of N. The model was tested by comparing American (USE) and Standard Southern British English (BRE) based on the assumption that this diachronic change is more advanced in USE. Real-time MRI data was collected from 16 USE and 27 BRE adult speakers producing mo…
