Opening the Black Box
Clients play a critical role in student consulting projects, but how they approach these roles is largely unknown. Since client meetings typically occur outside of class and empirical research on client views is limited, the engagement practices that clients employ in their interactions with students represent a “black box” that needs to be unlocked. This article opens the lid of this metaphorical black box, presenting findings from qualitative r…
The Dual Logic of Marabout Authority and Human Rights Violations among Talibé Children in Burkina Faso
The long-run effects of Interstate highways on rural America
This paper estimates how Interstate highway construction affected the adult outcomes of individuals born into rural America using longitudinally linked microdata. While aggregate cross-sectional studies find mixed effects of highways on rural economies, we reveal substantial person-based benefits that persist even when individuals migrate. By instrumenting highway construction with the 1947 federal highway plan, we identify highway impacts on per…

Gen Z in Senegal, West Africa and Mission in the Post-Religion Era

Roles of L1 and semantic features in L2 morpheme acquisition
This study builds on prior investigations into the influence of learners’ native language (L1) on morpheme acquisition, aiming to identify the factors that explain the varying effects of L1 across different morphemes. Specifically, it examines how the semantic characteristics of morphemes, combined with L1 influence, shape the development of morphological knowledge in English as a foreign language (EFL) compared to English as a second language (E…
A Qualitative Study on the Centralized Quarantine Experiences of Covid‐19 Patients With No or Mild Symptoms in South Korea
To mitigate the COVID‐19 epidemic, the South Korean government implemented institutional quarantine in centralized facilities from March 2020 to November 2022. Patients who tested positive were required to stay in these facilities for up to 2 weeks to meet the minimum 7‐day isolation. Tuberculosis in older adults
Older adults require specific consideration in TB response policies, given the burgeoning aging population and their high TB risk. Global Export Controls of Cyber Surveillance Technology and the Disrupted Triangular Dialogue
The proliferation and abuse of cyber surveillance technology is a global policy problem. The Wassenaar Arrangement is a central platform of international cooperation for regulating dual-use goods and technologies and the so-called ‘cyber’ amendments to Wassenaar have created a multilateral control mechanism for the export of cyber surveillance technology. Following criticism of the repressive use of ICT-powered surveillance tools supplied by priv…

Missed opportunities in the judicialisation of international criminal law? Asian states in the emergence and spread of the Rome Statute system to punish atrocity crimes
The expansion of the Rome Statute system is a clear indication of the judicialisation of international law, a normative trend that has accelerated in the past few decades. However, the current state of judicialisation cannot be regarded as “a linear story of success.” According to a critical analysis of Asian States’ overall engagement with the Rome Statute process, the International Criminal Court (ICC)-centered judicialisation has been stagnant…
Torus mandibularis in skeletal remains from the Joseon Dynasty and modern Korea
Torus mandibularis (TM), or mandibular tori, are nodular, excessive bony growths along the lingual side of the lower jaw. TM occurs in varying frequencies in different populations with a higher prevalence in Asiatic and circumpolar groups. The tori are associated with mechanical stress from masticatory and paramasticatory behaviors, heredity, sex, age, and environmental factors. We investigated the presence, location, symmetry, and degree of TM f…
