Investigating interlanguages beyond categorical analyses
In contrast to previous findings, our Italian learners of L2 German prosodically mark whether post-focal information within NPs is given or not. • They do this by transferring the prosodic contour from their L1 Italian, that is by modulating F0 on the first word of the noun phrase, • There is no difference in the modulation of the acoustic parameters on the second word, where deaccentuation typically occurs in Germanic languages when post-focal. …
The perception of post-focal prominence is (also) a matter of linguistic structure
This paper reports on a web-based experiment to investigate the perception of prominence in words with different focus structures in Italian. In the experiment, native listeners of the Bari variety of Italian, and German learners of Italian, rated the perceived prominence of object nouns in broad and narrow focus and post-focally using a visual analogue scale. Although both groups of listeners rated words in narrow focus as higher in prominence t…
Prosodic marking of information status in Italian
The state of stop–fricative alternation in Modern Hebrew
The stops [p, b, k] often alternate with respective fricatives [f, v, χ] in Modern Hebrew ( MH ). This general pattern was designed to follow the spirantization process of Biblical Hebrew as it was depicted in the Masoretic orthography. While this orthography is retained in MH , its phonological infrastructure is very different from that of Biblical Hebrew, and it cannot support a phonological process of spirantization. This problematic state of …
Filler Syllables in the Acquisition of Hebrew
In this paper we review the phenomenon of filler syllables in the early speech of RM, a monolingual Hebrew-acquiring girl. Our findings support former claims, in particular those made in Demuth (2001a), which tie the emergence of filler syllables with the process of prosodic structure acquisition. We present longitudinal corpus-based data that are analyzed against pre-defined stages in RM’s acquisition of prosodic units to corroborate our predict…
