State Building and the (Trans)Regionalization of Families in the ‘Middle East’
Classes in transition: Intergenerational family trajectories and forced migration in historical context
Flight trajectories are not only a matter of spatial mobility but are also concerned with social mobility. Class dynamics shape possibilities for action and the character of refugees’ networks. Moving or being forced to move and the planning of routes and destinations are closely interrelated with the migrant’s class at the outset of their journey. Migration is also related to previous trajectories of social mobility and the transmission of resou…

Comparing Small Gatherings in Their Urban Contexts: An Interpretive Approach to a Socio-spatial Arena
This article introduces small gatherings as a socio-spatial arena that enables a comparative perspective on the basis of detailed empirical research. Small gatherings allow for an analysis of sociality in the city which can be combined with the analysis of its concrete spatiality and intersecting socio-historical processes. The challenge of doing research on small gatherings lies in the fact that they are fuzzy and may, or may not, traverse estab…
Introduction: Reconstructive biographical research
Reconstructive biographical research is a diverse and differentiated sociological field. In this introduction, we trace its interdisciplinary and transnational historical development, consider the most important theoretical influences, and characterize central research areas. In this way, we show that reconstructive biographical research is a distinct sociological approach to social analysis. It offers a reflexive access to understanding, classif…
On the emergence and changing positions of old-established groupings in migration contexts: A process perspective on group formation in Jordan
While being 'old-established' is usually seen as a product of the social negotiation of migration, there is little empirical research on how this category evolves and changes over time. To unravel this process, we focus in this article on the group formation processes which contribute to the making and unmaking of being 'old-established' as a pattern of interpretation, a we-image and a potential power chance in various figurations. A combination …

Old Men’s Truth: The ‘Poverty Generation’ of Neighborhood Men Talk about Life in Jerusalem’s Old City
In this article, I consider local conditions in Palestine through a focus on generational issues and neighborhood relations. I exemplify this by joint experiences and self presentations of (male) lower-class residents of an Old City neighborhood in Jerusalem who experienced childhood and youth during the Jordanian rule of the city between 1948 and 1967. I argue that these ‘old men’ form a generational connection, a ‘generation unit’ in the sense …
The Nexus of Corporate Income Taxation and Multinational Activity
If a firm operates abroad, the host and the residence country have to decide how to divide the taxing rights among them. Firstly, the host country has to determine whether or not the firm has to file for income taxation at source. Secondly, the income has to be split between the two jurisdictions for tax purposes. These two decisions determine the extent of source- and residence-based taxation. We build a two-country model with costs of tax admin…
