Prosodic Phrasing and Comprehension
From previous research we know that prosodic features are perceptually effective in marking boundaries and that a suitable implementation of these features improves the quality of synthetic speech in terms of acceptability. It can further be assumed that listeners use the perceived prosodic information to compute the meaning of the input speech. This paper, therefore, investigates and determines whether a well-phrased utterance, (that is, an utte…
A Perceptual Study of Intonation. An Experimental-Phonetic Approach to Speech Melody
A Perceptual Study of Intonation
This book presents an experimental-phonetic approach to the study of intonation, defined as the ensemble of pitch variations in speech. It brings together in a single volume a detailed explication of the stylization method used in the analysis of intonation; theoretical insights and the experimental evidence that supports them, the results of physiological measurements that substantiate hypotheses about the production of intonation; and applicati…

Some Acoustic and Physiological Observations on Diphthongs
This paper presents an analysis of some articulatory properties of (Dutch) diphthongs, attempting to correlate articulatory inferences based on perceptual and acoustic data with more direct physiological measurements (recordings of EMG activity). Evidence is presented that supports a distinction between "genuine" and "pseudo" diphthongs: the two classes appear to differ (1) in openness and advancement at their onsets and offsets, (2) in the harmo…
Tongue Position in Rounded and Unrounded Front Vowel Pairs
Traditional articulatory descriptions of front rounded and unrounded vowel pairs have assumed that tongue height is the same for the members of the pairs /i-y/, /e-ø/, and /ε-œ/. The electromyographic, articulatory synthetic, and acoustic investigations carried out in this study indicate that, in Dutch, the rounded member of the pairs /i-y/ and /e-ø/ was centralized. In the /ε-œ/ pair, however, the rounded vowel bears a different relationship to …
