  • The lexicon–syntax boundary in English numerals

    Open Access•B Reynolds•ARTICLE•English Language and Linguistics•2026

I argue for a hybrid analysis of English numeratives that (i) treats the extended basic numeratives (0–99) as lexemes but (ii) analyzes larger expressions as syntactic phrases or coordinations with magnitudes ( hundred , thousand , million , ...) as heads and factors ( two hundred , forty-two million , ...) as (obligatory) modifiers. A number of independent diagnostics – including ordinal/fractional morphology, prosodic phrasing and ellipsis/coor…

  • Why more and less are never adverbs

    Open Access•B Reynolds•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•2024•References: 4

I argue that more and less are always determinatives, contrary to the categorization in The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language ( CGEL ), which treats them as adverbs in analytic comparatives. Evidence is presented of contrasts between more / less and much / little in various contexts, challenging CGEL ’s empirical claim that such contrasts never occur in analytic comparatives. The observed distributional patterns can largely be explained b…

  • Quantifying the Differences Between Lexical Categories

    Open Access•B Reynolds•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Linguística e Teoria…•2021•References: 10

The Cambridge grammar of the English language (HUDDLESTON; PULLUM, 2002) attempts to present a comprehensive and rigorous description of Modern Standard English. Much of the book is taken up with describing the properties of the various lexical categories, including determinative and pronoun. The distinction between these categories has been questioned by various authors in English (ABNEY, 1987; CROFT, 2001; HUDSON, 2004; MATTHEWS, 2014; POSTAL, …

  • Factors influencing bulk precipitation chemistry at an upland site in mid‐Wales

B Reynolds, Michael Hornung et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1984

Bulk precipitation at an upland grassland catchment was monitored over a two year period using a continuously open collector. The data were analysed to establish the relative contributions from marine and non‐marine sources and the influence of wind direction and speed on precipitation chemistry. The precipitation is dilute, acidic and dominated by sea derived solutes. The relative contribution of marine‐derived solutes is related to weather cond…
