Dual-track in the family: How spousal state employment fuels entrepreneurship
Unraveling the Nexus: How street network morphology influences crime in Detroit
Urban streets are primary settings for criminal activities. Although prior studies have examined various environmental factors influencing criminal behavior, insufficient attention has been paid to street configurational types within street network morphology. To address this gap, this study employs kernel density estimation and spatial autocorrelation to analyze the spatial distribution patterns of assault, robbery, larceny, and motor vehicle th…
Social desirability and life satisfaction in Chinese students: Positive affect and self-esteem as the mediators and necessary conditions
Many studies in this field have focused on social desirability bias while neglecting the substance of social desirability. To address this gap, this study investigated the essence of social desirability and its relationship with life satisfaction among Chinese university students. We placed a particular emphasison the mediatingroles of positiveaffect and self-esteem, and on their roles in creating necessary conditions for life satisfaction. The c…

Applying large language models for automated essay scoring for non-native Japanese
Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have led to an increased use of large language models (LLMs) for language assessment tasks such as automated essay scoring (AES), automated listening tests, and automated oral proficiency assessments. The application of LLMs for AES in the context of non-native Japanese, however, remains limited. This study explores the potential of LLM-based AES by comparing the efficiency of different models, …
Unobserved Endowments and Gender Differences in Marriage Matching
This study investigates the effects of unobserved earnings-related endowments on marital outcomes, focusing on potential gender differences. Using a less stringent, more plausible assumption that monozygotic twins share more similar endowments relative to dizygotic twins, we develop a novel identification strategy from the twins experiment. Using unique Chinese twins survey data, we find that men with genetic endowments related to higher earnings…
Multidimensional Premarital Investments with Imperfect Commitment
We analyze premarital investments in human capital and housing when individuals are unable to make binding commitments to share their labor income with a prospective spouse. Investments are distorted if there are gender differences in bargaining power over own labor income or marriage market imbalances. Distortions are magnified when ex ante bargaining power favors one sex (e.g., women in China) and ex post bargaining power favors the other (e.g.…
Morphosyntactic complexity in Japanese advertising slogans
This study applies mathematical linguistics to explore the morphological richness and syntactic freedom of Japanese advertising slogans and identify associations between the morphosyntactic features and the popularity of slogans. The data were drawn from the Tokyo Copywriters Yearbook, which includes 12 genres of advertising slogans. Mean dependency distance (MDD) and entropy (ENTR) were employed to measure syntactic diversity, and moving-average…
The Diachronic Shift of Japanese Transitive/Unaccusative Verb Pairs
This study explores how Japanese transitive/unaccusative verb pairs have transformed from being a substantive verb to the various forms they fulfil in Modern Japanese (i.e., an aspectual verb, a noun, an adjective, an adverb, a quantifier and a suffix) and how grammaticalisation and lexicalisation play an essential role during the processes. A working definition of ‘grammaticalisation’ and ‘lexicalisation’ that applies to Japanese is put forward,…

Prenatal Gabab Receptor Agonist Administration Corrects the Inheritance of Autism-Like Core Behaviors in Offspring of Mice Prenatally Exposed to Valproic Acid
This study was performed to evaluate the effects of prenatal baclofen (a GABAB receptor agonist) treatment on the inheritance of autism-like behaviors in valproic acid (VPA)-exposed mice. VPA model mice (first generation, F1) that were prenatally exposed to VPA exhibited robust core autism-like behaviors, and we found that oral administration of baclofen to F1 mice corrected their autism-like behavioral phenotypes at an early age. Based on a prev…
A Lexical-Pragmatic Approach to Japanese Wakamono Kotoba ‘Youth Language’ yabai
This study uncovers the morphosyntactic properties of yabai and its clipped forms. It aims to arrive at an understanding of how the forms and the meanings might be associated. A lexical-pragmatic-based analysis was carried out using Twitter and speech corpus data. The findings reveal the following picture of the lexeme: (a) when yabai undertakes an adjective role, modifying a noun, it is likely that a negative evaluation is invited. In this regar…
The “miseries” of sex imbalance: Evidence using subjective well-being data
Alphabetical Author Order, Intellectual Collaboration and High-Skilled Migration
We study the consequences of alphabetical author order in economics for job placements of economists, based on a context that enables a clean identification. Results using two different data sets both show that, relative to Chinese physicists and statisticians, Chinese economists with surname initials located later in the alphabet tend not to stay in the US and are more likely to work in China. Such effects of surname initials on job placements a…
STS: Spatial–Temporal–Semantic Personalized Location Recommendation
The rapidly growing location-based social network (LBSN) has become a promising platform for studying users’ mobility patterns. Many online applications can be built based on such studies, among which, recommending locations is of particular interest. Previous studies have shown the importance of spatial and temporal influences on location recommendation; however, most existing approaches build a universal spatial–temporal model for all users des…
Sequential Voicing in Old Japanese
This study tackles sequential voicing in Old Japanese with a focus on three matters: (a) the interaction of the eight vowels and aspirated consonants; (b) the association of the written system and sequential voicing; and (c) the interaction between the combinationality of each constituent and sequential voicing. Four hundred and seventy-two compound nouns of Old Japanese were collected from the corpus ‘The Japanese Lexicon: A Rendaku Encyclopedia…
Causative/Inchoative Verb Alternation in Altaic Languages: Turkish, Turkmen, Nanai and Mongolian
The purpose of the study is two-fold. First, a statistical analysis of the morphology of causative/inchoative verb alternation is carried out in Japanese and in 13 Altaic languages, i.e., Turkish, Turkmen, Nanai, Khakas, Udihe, Uzbek, Sakha, Manchu, Kyrgyz, Mongolian, Kazakh, Ewen, and Azerbaijani. The findings reveal that causative/inchoative verb alternation (a) can be realised via the insertion of an infix (‘-uul-’, ‘-e-’, ‘-g-’, etc.); (b) ca…
