Historical and Historic Sites Archaeology as Anthropology
Normally a discipline either inherits its title from its subject matter, witness for example Egyptology, Classical Archaeology, or more vaguely Prehistoric Archaeology, or it inherits it from its basic approach to its subject matter. Implied in the discussion is that anthropology is more holistic than history, and in some ways it may well be. Historical Archaeology is viewed as covering a subject matter which in no sense is a unified historical e…
The Spoken Word, the Written Word, Observed Behavior and Preserved Behavior
Archaeological data present the researcher with one of the strongest lines of evidence for reconstructing past human behavior. Archaeology is the principal source when it stands alone as it does for the totality of prehistory and for the numerous prehistoric interludes within the historic period. Historical writings may record human behavior in the form of observations of human actions or statistical data. Documents can be the basis for either an…

History of Historical Archaeology
On Sunday April 19, 1998 Jean Carl Harrington (known to the profession as J.C. or "Pinky" Harrington) passed away at his home in Richmond, Virginia. At 96 Harrington's life almost spanned the 20th century and did encompass the rise and establishment of professional Historical Archaeology in North America. Many consider Harrington to be the founder or "father" of Americanist Historical Archaeology. In 1936 he took over the newly created NPS-CCC pr…

The Supply Mill on Content Brook in Massachusetts
Excavation of the Supply Mill, an 18th-19th century industrial site in eastern Massachusetts, exemplifies the wide range of data available for late historical sites. Archaeology, archival documentation, photography, and oral history are correlated to provide as full a reconstruction as possible of this sawmill. Comparison of the differing ranges of data, in turn, results in some general conclusions on field work in historical archaeology

The History of American Archaeology
Recently, there has been an intensification of interest in the history of American archaeology, and a number of general attempts at delineating the history of the entire field have been advanced since 1940. Most of these overall views have taken the form of explanatory-periodization schemes. Four of these schemes are reviewed in this article and then examined in the light of 4 testcase studies: (1) the initial period of archaeology in the Southwe…

History and Historical Criticism
The collaboration of Richardson and Sayles in the investigation of early English parliamentary history has long been justly celebrated. A full generation has passed since the publication of the first of those studies of theirs which have done so much to widen and deepen knowledge about medieval parliaments and have made their names, usually coupled, household words with students of medieval English constitutional history. The authors were influen…
