  • The contested city

Atanu Bhattacharya, Preet Hiradhar•ARTICLE•Journal of Postcolonial Writing•2022•References: 15

Speculative fiction emerged in 19th-century Bengal as a mode of narrative engagement with the city’s colonial modernity during its contact with British colonialism. This fiction, however, was essentially a city-based enterprise interacting with, and moulding, the imperial city of Kolkata in myriad ways. The interaction gave rise to dissenting voices within the gradually emerging educated class of Kolkata. This article explores such intersections …

  • Six Decades of Glacier Mass Changes around Mt. Everest Are Revealed by Historical and Contemporary Images

Open Access•Owen King, Atanu Bhattacharya et al.•ARTICLE•One Earth•2020

The accurate quantification of current and past Himalayan glacier mass budgets is vital if we are to understand the evolution of the Asian water tower, which provides water to the planet’s most populous region. Everest and found consistent acceleration of glacier mass loss between the 1960s (−0.23 ± 0.12 mwe a−1) and the modern era (−0.38 ± 0.1…

Mitra’s works are located within the history of science fiction writings in Bengal and the article proposes that his tales can be analysed as instances of “historical catachresis” – a stretching of historical time and place. It examines…
