  • Feelings in Literature

    Open Access•Jørgen Dines Johansen•ARTICLE•Integrative Psychological and…•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 3

In this article it is argued that feelings are all important to the function of literature. In contradiction to music that is concerned with the inwardness of humankind, literature has, because of language, the capacity to create fictional worlds that in many respects are similar to and related to the life world within which we live. One of the most important reasons for our emotional engagement in literature is our empathy with others and our co…

  • A semiotic definition of literary discourse

    Open Access•Jørgen Dines Johansen•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2007•References: 4

In this article, an anthropological definition of literature is attempted. Since all communities seem to have some kind of literature (including its simple forms: myth, folktale, fable, proverb, and song), literature is claimed to be a human universal. Hence, literary discourse should be added to the four basic discourses that Habermas has pointed out and discussed; namely, theoretical, practical, historical, and technical discourses. Five charac…

  • Litteratur og subjektivitet

    Open Access•Jørgen Dines Johansen•ARTICLE•K&K - Kultur og Klasse•2006

Literature and subjectivityLiterature, it is claimed, is the discourse that is able to represent man’s experience of existence in its totality, but simultaneously as fragmented. The human species is characterized by unique brain capacity, long childhood, no mating seasons, longevity, and the possibility of entering into complex social and labour relations. In addition, man is always, by necessity, bound to his own mind and body, to the privileged…

  • The mask of maidenhood

    Open Access•Jørgen Dines Johansen•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2000

A semiotic mapping of the study of literature

  • Unruly genitals

    Open Access•Jørgen Dines Johansen•ARTICLE•Semiotica•1997
