Mandarin-speaking preschoolers with early implanted CIs can perceive word boundaries like their hearing peers
Although children with cochlear implants (CIs) have limited access to pitch information due to the suboptimal device transmission, durational cues are relatively well preserved, allowing for the acquisition of prosodic cues needed for communication. Recent findings show that Mandarin-speaking preschoolers with CIs can produce prosodic cues (e.g., duration and pitch) to disambiguate noun-noun compounds (e.g., xiong-mao “panda”) and lists (e.g., xi…
“ Panda ” or “ Bear, cat ”
Compounds (e.g., jellybeans ) and list forms (e.g., jelly, beans ) can be distinguished by the presence or absence of boundaries, marked by durational and pitch cues. Studies have shown that 5-year-olds learning English have acquired both cues for distinguishing compounds and lists. However, it is not clear how and when this ability is acquired by children speaking tonal languages, such as Mandarin. This study examined whether Mandarin-speaking p…
Due to increased variability, the expanded vowel and tone space in Mandarin IDS does not lead to enhanced contrasts
Expanded vowel or tone space in IDS has traditionally been interpreted as evidence of enhanced acoustic contrasts. However, emerging evidence from various languages shows that the within-category acoustic variability of vowels and tones also increases in IDS, offsetting the benefit of space expansion and leading to non-enhanced, or reduced acoustic contrasts. This study re-analysed a corpus of Mandarin IDS and ADS, showing that, relative to ADS, …
Teacher Support, Academic Buoyancy, Engagement, and English Academic Achievement
Along with the evolution of positive psychology in second language (L2) education, increasing attention has been directed toward the role of non‐cognitive factors in facilitating language development. Although teacher support has been identified as a crucial external resource, the psychological mechanisms through which it influences English academic achievement, particularly the interplay with learners’ internal states, remain under‐explored in E…

Internally Validated Logistic Regression Nomogram for Depressive Symptoms Risk Prediction in Middle-Aged and Older Adults With Sarcopenia
Sarcopenia is associated with an elevated burden of depressive symptoms, yet screening tools may have limited accuracy and generalizability in this population. We developed and validated an interpretable machine-learning model to predict depressive symptoms risk among middle-aged and older adults with sarcopenia using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2020 data. In this cross-sectional study, we included 913 participa…
Online Citizen Diplomacy
This article reconceptualises online citizen diplomacy as an autonomous, ethically anchored diplomatic practice emerging within the global virtuality as an operational power. Departing from state-centric frameworks such as soft power and public diplomacy, it advances a constructivist model centred on relational, collaborative and networked forms of engagement. In this recursive framework, informed and responsible citizens co-construct shared prob…
The development of Mandarin-learning preschoolers’ use of prosody and semantic cues in verbal emotion identification
Prosody and semantic content are important cues in emotion perception, though they are not always congruent, as in irony, humor, and insincerity. Adults typically rely on prosody to interpret emotions when cues conflict, while children gradually shift their reliance from semantics to prosody with age, acquiring adult-like cue-weighting strategies during the school years. However, it was unclear whether children learning tonal languages such as Ma…
Strengthening workforce resilience to sustain community health services during crises
Background Ensuring the resilience and retention of the primary healthcare workforce is critical to maintaining health service continuity during public health crises. While pandemic preparedness frameworks increasingly emphasize integrated economic and health policies, the role of organizational and psychological factors in sustaining frontline health personnel has received less empirical attention. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence …
Parental Financial Socialization and Youth Subsequent Victimization of Intimate Partner Abuse
Youth in Hong Kong are at high risk of experiencing economic abuse and other forms of intimate partner violence (Other IPV), especially those from lower SES families. Identifying relevant predictors and mechanisms is practically pressing. Guided by the economic empowerment perspective and the family financial socialization framework, this study examined the associations between parental financial socialization and youth subsequent victimization o…
Bridging the gap
The findings suggested higher psychological resilience related to better family resilience which can provide supportive environment, thus contributing to increased parental premature infant care competence. Future researchers could pay more attention to the early resilience assessment of parents and family resilience improvements based on the formation of therapeutic alliance with the entire family system of preterm babies
Delayed orthodontic care and its association with depression among Chinese adolescents
Adolescents undergoing orthodontic treatment are at a heightened risk of developing depressive symptoms, particularly when facing significant treatment delays. Early intervention, including psychological support, education on treatment importance, and financial assistance, is essential to mitigate these risks and improve both oral and mental health outcomes
The Hidden Danger of Unintentional Child Injuries in an Urban Domestic Environment
Parents should enhance their safety awareness by focusing on potential hazards at home and taking appropriate measures to improve the home environment, thereby creating a safe and comfortable setting for the healthy growth of their children
Socioeconomic status moderate the relationship between mental health literacy, social participation, and active aging among Chinese older adults
These results contribute novel insights into the bidirectional relationships among mental health literacy, social participation, and active aging, as well as the role of SES in moderating these relationships. The findings highlight the need for targeted policy interventions to address socioeconomic inequalities in later life, thereby fostering active aging
Network characteristics of referrals for chronic disease patients
The referral network has a vertical flow pattern conducive to the division of labour, cooperation, and resource integration of medical institutions in the region, and a hierarchical medical order is taking shape. However, poor communication between secondary hospitals and other institutions, high demand for data informatisation, and the gap between private and public PCFs may hinder further progress

Association between psychological capital and depressive symptoms during Covid-19
Introduction The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic affects individuals' mental health that can result in fear of getting COVID-19 infection and depression. Prior research has demonstrated that both psychological capital and perceived social support are related to the severity of depression. Yet no study explored the direction of associations between these factors. This undermines the validity of psychological capital as a basis for hea…
The acquisition of contrastive focus during online sentence-comprehension by children learning Mandarin Chinese
Contrastive focus, conveyed by prosodic cues, marks important information. Studies have shown that 6-year-olds learning English and Japanese can use contrastive focus during online sentence comprehension: focus used in a contrastive context facilitates the identification of a target referent (speeding up processing), whereas focus used inappropriately in a noncontrastive context misleads listeners to predict an incorrect referent, hindering the i…

Complementing three theoretical frameworks, conceptual metaphor theory (Lakoff and Johnson 1980) and critical metaphor analysis (Charteris-Black 2004; Musolff 2006, 2016) and multimodality from a cognitive viewpoint (Forceville and Urios-Aparisi 2009; Perez-Sobrina 2017), this study addresses the topic of China’s images unfolded in six BBC documentaries that are related to Chinese economy, social life, education, history, folklore, and cuisine re…
Acquisition of weak syllables in tonal languages
Weak syllables in Germanic and Romance languages have been reported to be challenging for young children, with syllable omission and/or incomplete reduction persisting till age five. In Mandarin Chinese, neutral tone (T0) involves a weak syllable with varied pitch realizations across (preceding) tonal contexts and short duration. The present study examined how and when T0 was acquired by 108 Beijing Mandarin-speaking children (3–5 years) relative…
The development of abstract representations of tone sandhi
Phonological processes result in surface variants of the same words across phonological contexts, posing potential word learning challenges for children. Mandarin tone sandhi is a tonal process changing Tone 3 (T3) in different tonal and syntactic contexts, resulting in allophonic variants of T3 in connected speech. Previous studies found that Mandarin-learning 3-year-olds were able to productively apply tone sandhi processes in novel compounds, …
