  • An Analysis of Interruption in an Interview from the Perspective of Conversation Analysis

Open Access•Yueqi Ma, Yi Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2026

As a very natural and common language phenomenon, conversation interruption appears to disrupt the complete turn-taking structure. However, the use of interruption can also promote the smooth progress of conversations in some special conversation situations. This paper is aimed to analyze the interruption modes adopted by the host in an interview, and ultimately summarize the interruption strategies applied in the interview based on conversation …

  • Delineating how PCIs develop into GCIs from a cognition-pragmatics diachronic perspective: A case study of Chinese méimù

Open Access•Nina Liang, Yanfei Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Pragmatics Quarterly Publication…•2026

The Gricean GCI-PCI divide has long been questioned in linguistic pragmatics. Taking Chinese méimù in the CCL corpus as the case, the present study proposes the cognition-pragmatics diachronic model to examine Grice’s GCI-PCI divide. It is found that with the frequency of repeated usage increasing over time, PCIs develop into GCIs; these two types of conversational implicatures are not easily divided. Semantic change from PCIs to GCIs is a dynami…

  • Conversational implicature: A diachronic cognitive pragmatic approach

Open Access•Ruili Su, Yanfei Zhang•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2025

This study conducts a corpus-based diachronic investigation of the noun phrase hóngyǎn (红眼) and proposes the diachronic cognitive pragmatic model to demonstrate that particularized conversational implicatures develop into generalized conversational implicatures and eventually become new coded meanings. The results show that (1) different types of meanings such as generalized conversational implicatures and particularized conversational implicatur…

  • Scalar implicature: An encyclopedic semantic approach

Open Access•Yanfei Zhang, Nina Liang et al.•ARTICLE•Pragmatics and Society•2025

Scalar implicature is a very interesting topic in linguistic pragmatics. This study is intended to argue that, based on the Cognitive Grammar paradigm, scalar implicature is contextually activated by schematic networks. From a hierarchical perspective, those linguistic units sharing the same schema can be compared; from a horizontal perspective, these units are distributed from the stronger to the weaker in terms of semantic inclusion. The encycl…

  • Validity of the Tree Drawing Test Suicide Ideation Assessment Scale in adolescents

Open Access•Yanfei Zhang, Yige Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

The TDT-SIAS demonstrated good screening performance and effectively distinguished adolescents with suicidal ideation from those without. It may serve as a preliminary screening tool for adolescent suicidal ideation. However, limitations of this study include the relatively small sample size and the lack of consideration for cultural differences, which may affect generalizability. Future studies should expand sample size and examine cross-cultura…

  • Tree drawing test as an auxiliary tool for evaluating schizophrenia treatment outcomes

Open Access•Yige Liu, Jing Yuan et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

In schizophrenia patients, quantitative indicators of the Tree Drawing Projection Test-specifically crown area, crown height, and crown width-demonstrated steady increases across Week 1, Week 13, and Week 37, with these changes being statistically significant. These findings suggest that the Tree Drawing Projection Test can serve as a useful tool for assessing clinical treatment efficacy in schizophrenia

  • How Saussure is misinterpreted in Cognitive Grammar

    Open Access•Yanfei Zhang, Shaojie Zhang•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 14

As the father of modern linguistics, Ferdinand de Saussure influences all aspects of linguistic development with no exception of Cognitive Grammar. A scrutiny of how Saussure is understood in Cognitive Grammar indicates that Saussurean linguistics is misinterpreted in terms of five core ideas: (1) langue, rather than parole, is given highest priority; (2) the internal relation of "signifier-signified" counts as the pairing of "form-meaning"; (3) …

  • A cognitive-pragmatic study of non-scalar implicatures

    Open Access•Yanfei Zhang, Shaojie Zhang•ARTICLE•Pragmatics and Society•2020

Whether or not non-entailment relations generate scalar implicatures is a cutting-edge issue in linguistic pragmatics. The present study intends to argue that, based on the Cognitive Grammar paradigm, non-scalar implicatures generated by non-entailment relations are manifested as cognitive defaults which are conventionally incorporated into symbolic units in schema-instance complexes. Conventions provide a shortcut for the hearer to infer non-sca…

Analyzing the China Urban Labor Survey/China Adult Literacy Survey, this paper shows that while women are significantly disadvantaged by various measures of human and political capital, these disadvantages explain little of the observed gender gaps in employment status and earnings. …
