Advancing training in video-mediated interpreting for asylum and refugee settings: Integrating minimum requirements and research-based approaches
Video-mediated interpreting (VMI) can enhance access to language support in asylum reception, but its success relies on context-sensitive guidelines and training. This paper introduces a VMI training framework developed through the European Project EU-WEBPSI, which consolidates research and professional standards into minimum requirements for asylum and refugee contexts. Addressing technical, interactional, and ethical dimensions, it clarifies sh…
Communication difficulties and strategies in migrant mental healthcare: A European survey of health and social care professionals
South Asian patient experiences of professional interpreting service provision in general practice in England: A qualitative interview study
No/low English proficiency patients need additional support when booking interpreted-assisted appointments. Increasing patient awareness of and confidence in professional language support is vital to uptake of services. Emphasising the benefits of professional support over informal options is important, with links to patient safety. We provide recommendations for general practice in how to support the uptake of professional interpreting services
Mental health care for migrants in the Netherlands: A decolonial perspective
This study addresses the mental health needs of refugees and migrants in the Netherlands, highlighting the urgent public health challenges they face. Unique psychosocial hurdles, exacerbated by cultural dislocation, language barriers and systemic inequalities, hinder their access to quality mental healthcare. This study explores how coloniality intersects with mental healthcare access, using a decolonial framework to challenge stereotypes and ass…
Charting the landscape of remote medical interpreting: An international survey of interpreters working in remote modalities in healthcare services
What a micro-analytical investigation of additions and expansions in remote interpreting can tell us about interpreters' participation in a shared virtual space
Creating Coherence in Audio Description
As an emerging form of intermodal translation, audio description (AD) raises many new questions for Translation Studies and related disciplines. This paper will investigate the question of how the coherence of a multimodal source text such as a film can be re-created in audio description. Coherence in film characteristically emerges from links within and across different modes of expression (e.g., links between visual images, image-sound links an…
Audio description with audio subtitling – an emergent modality of audiovisual localisation
Audio description (AD) has established itself as a media access service for blind and partially sighted people across a range of countries, for different media and types of audiovisual performance (e.g. film, TV, theatre, opera). In countries such as the UK and Spain, legislation has been implemented for the provision of AD on TV, and the European Parliament has requested that AD for digital TV be monitored in projects such as DTV4ALL (www.psp-dt…
Interpreting in small-group bilingual videoconferences: Challenges and adaptation processes
When interpreting takes place in a videoconference setting, the intrinsic technological challenges and the very remoteness of the interpreters’ location compound the complexity of the task. Existing research on remote interpreting and the problems it entails focusses on remote conference interpreting, in which the interpreters are physically separated from the conference site while the primary interlocutors are together on site as usual. In an ef…
