  • Evaluations of Chinese compliment responses

    Open Access•Mian Jia•ARTICLE•Journal of Pragmatics•2026

Recent studies on Chinese compliment responses (CRs) have shown that the preferred response has evolved from rejection to deflection/evasion and acceptance. When interpreting these findings, previous studies often rely on predefined cultural, regional, and sociological factors, running the risk of overlooking the inherent variabilities between different individuals in the same group. To better account for people's varying perceptions of complimen…

The interaction effects between threat agency and nominalized forms predicted perceived response …

  • One HPV Vaccination Message Does Not Fit All

    Open Access•Ruoxiao Su, Keri K Stephens et al.•ARTICLE•Health Communication•2025

Despite decades of research on HPV vaccination, the U.S. has still not achieved optimal vaccination rates. This study investigated two different message strategies (agency assignment and deviance regulation marking) for encouraging HPV vaccination in two different populations: parents considering vaccinating their children and young adults (18-26) considering vaccinating themselves. Using a 2 × 3 × 3 online experiment, this study examined the dif…

  • Diachronic Research on Chinese Discourse Markers in China

    Open Access•Guoping Yang, Mian Jia•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2025

Diachronic research on discourse markers (DMs) has gained momentum in recent years, but the international community has only seen a few studies on the evolution of Chinese discourse markers (CDMs). One crucial reason is that many diachronic studies on CDMs are published in Chinese-written journals and have escaped international audiences. To address this gap, this paper reviews the diachronic studies of CDMs from scholars who are housed in Chines…

  • Communicating Antibiotic Resistance via Linguistic Agency Assignment

Zhengyu Zhang, Mian Jia et al.•ARTICLE•Health Communication•2023

Antibiotic resistance is a serious health threat that healthcare providers must communicate to the public to decelerate its development. Prior studies have shown that linguistic agency assignment is a viable strategy to frame health threats in a way that both conveys their severity and preserves audience members’ sense of self-efficacy. In the current study, we examined this messaging strategy in the context of antibiotic resistance. Individuals’…

Drawing on Uncertainty Reduction Theory and Expectancy Violations Theory, this study examines the relationship between unwanted persistent pursuit (UPP) behaviors and ghosting behaviors. An online survey distributed via Amazon’s Mechanical Turk found that those who experienced UPP were more likely to have previously engaged in ghosting behaviors. Additionally, those who experienced being ghosted had a more positive attitude toward UPP than those …

    Open Access•Mian Jia, Yi Zhao•ARTICLE•Pragmatics and Society•2023

Guided by the Extended Parallel Process Model (EPPM), this paper explicates the messaging strategies in Chinese public signs of COVID-19 prevention in local communities. 162 signs were collected from Internet posts. Our results show that the EPPM is a viable fear appeal framework to explain the communication of public health risks. Most signs communicated the threat of the virus to the public, whereas fewer signs emphasized the efficacy to effect…

  • Toward an Integrated Understanding of Language Use in Health Communication

    Open Access•Mian Jia•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics•2022

Applied linguists and Communication scholars have mainly adopted different yet complementary approaches to research on language and health communication. Using discourse-analytic (DA) approaches such as conversation analysis and corpus analysis, applied linguists tend to focus on describing and explicating health messaging techniques in naturally occurring interactions. In contrast, communication scholars favour message design (MD) approaches tha…
