British fascism, fascist culture, British culture
In reading British fascism as a cultural phenomenon, historians have started to chart the cultural products and visions of British fascists during the interwar and post-war periods. Such analysis has tended to focus on fascists’ discourse on culture (particularly the ways that they position liberalism and modernism as degenerate), or on the cultural texts of fascists/fascism in the form of, inter alia, literature, music, dress and art. George Mos…
The Routledge Handbook of Critical Discourse Studies
There are two ways to set up a discussion of critical discourse analysis and media studies. First, we would privilege something called Critical Discourse Analysis, the capitalized identity embodied in the acronym\n“CDA”.\n This approach has some obvious advantages. It gives an immediate focus and coherence to the discussion. It suggests reflection on a particular research tradition now well-known across the social sciences. The second approach wo…

Analysing Fascist Discourse: European Fascism in Talk and Text
This book focuses primarily on continuities and discontinuities of fascist politics as manifested in discourses of post-war European countries. Many traumatic pasts in Europe are linked to the experience of fascist and national-socialist regimes in the 20th century and to related colonial and imperialist expansionist politics. And yet we are again confronted with the emergence, rise and success of extreme right wing political movements, across Eu…

Get shot of the lot of them’: Election reporting of Muslims in British newspapers
Journalism provides us with a window on the ways that social, ethnic and religious sameness/diversity is viewed. Hence, an examination of the ideas and arguments in the journalistic media provides us with insights into social ideas and attitudes, specifically into the understandings of who ‘we’ are and who ‘they’ are that are circulating at any one time. Richardson examines the ways that British Muslims were represented in British national newspa…
Renewing an academic interest in structural inequalities
Class and class divisions remain central forces in shaping the ways we live. Indeed, arguably, in neo-liberal capitalist societies, class remains the primary division of structured social inequality. Official reports still speak of the vast inequalities in access to wealth, power and resources that characterise Western developed countries (Institute for Fiscal Studies, 2007; Institute for Public Policy Research, 2004; UNICEF, 2000). Massive secti…

Letters of Intent: Election Campaigning and Orchestrated Public Debate in Local Newspapers' Letters to the Editor
Drawing on the findings of an extensive study of local and regional newspaper reporting of the 2001 UK general election, this article contests the widely held view that readers' letters' pages provide a public forum for discussion and debate initiated by readers. The article argues that during election campaigns, local parties may become highly influential in shaping the contents of letters pages as part of their broader media based campaigning s…
British Muslims in the Broadsheet Press: A challenge to cultural hegemony
This paper examines the representation of British Muslim communities in the British broadsheet press and provides empirical evidence that (i) British Muslim communities are almost wholly absent from the news, excluded from all but predominantly negative contexts; (ii) that when British Muslims do appear, they are included only as participants in news events, not as providers of informed commentary on news events; and therefore (iii) that the issu…
Gender, subject and context as determinants of approaches to studying in higher education
Approaches to studying were measured in female and male students taking arts and science degrees in three Oxbridge colleges. Gender and context had little overall effect, but the students taking science courses obtained higher scores on reproducing orientation than those taking arts courses. Moreover, the female students produced higher scores on meaning orientation when they were taking arts courses in a ‘female ̊s environment and when they were…
