Unaccusativity and Grammatical Aspect: A Cross-Modal Lexical Priming Study
Unergative verbs assign the agent theta role to subjects whereas unaccusative verbs occur with theme subjects. Theory suggests that, unlike subjects of unergative verbs, theme subjects of unaccusative verbs are merged in the post-verbal internal argument position and moved to the pre-verbal external argument position. In a cross-modal lexical priming experiment, we tracked (re‐)activation patterns of the subject in sentences with imperfective and…
One suitcase, two grammars: What can we conclude about Australian Turkish heritage speakers’ divergent processing of evidentiality
This study investigates the processing of evidentiality using an auditory sentence verification task in heritage speakers of Turkish residing in Sydney, Australia. Evidentiality is a grammatical category that marks the sources of information through which the speaker comes to know information regarding an event. Turkish obligatorily marks two distinct forms of direct and indirect evidentials. We compare the sensitivity to evidentiality-informatio…
Visual priming and parsing preferences: A self-paced reading study of PP-attachment ambiguity in Dutch verb-final structures
Insights into the time course of evidentiality processing in Turkish heritage speakers using a self-paced reading task
Introduction Studies with heritage language speakers (HLS) have often used offline measurements, investigating the post-interpretive effects which emerge after processing has been completed. Relatively few studies have investigated heritage language processing using time-sensitive methods that allow the collection of evidence regarding real-time language processing rather than post-interpretive judgments. Using a self-paced-reading paradigm, we a…
Sentence repetition span in primary progressive aphasia and Alzheimer's disease: Insights from preliminary results
Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) is a neurocognitive disorder ascribed to cortical atrophy impacting language abilities. It is widely classified into three main variants, logopenic PPA (lvPPA), the semantic variant of PPA (svPPA), and the non-fluent PPA (nfvPPA), showing different impairment patterns across variants. However, in the early phases of PPA, it is not always easy to dissociate different PPA variants and distinguish PPA from other neu…
Inappropriate Choice of Definites in Turkish Heritage Speakers of German
The appropriate use of (in-)definites can be notoriously difficult for language learners to acquire, suggesting that this linguistic domain is particularly prone to instability in language acquisition. The current study investigates whether heritage speakers also have difficulties in this domain. We report the results from a questionnaire study investigating heritage speakers’ sensitivity to contextual cues to the appropriate use of (in-)definite…
