  • Testifying while black: An experimental study of court reporter accuracy in transcription of African American English

Open Access•Taylor Jones, Jessica Rose Kalbfeld et al.•ARTICLE•Language•2019•Cited by: 16

Court reporters are certified at either 95% or 98% accuracy, depending on their certifying organization; however, the measure of accuracy is not one that evaluates their ability to transcribe nonstandard dialects. Here, we demonstrate that Philadelphia court reporters consistently fail to meet this level of transcription accuracy when confronted with mundane examples of spoken African American English (AAE). Furthermore, we show that they often c…

  • Conflict, cheap talk, and Jespersen's cycle

    Open Access•Christopher Ahern, Robin Clark•ARTICLE•Semantics and Pragmatics•2017

Game-theory has found broad application in modeling meaning in both the classical Gricean case of common interests between interlocutors and, more recently, in cases of conflicting interests. Here we consider how conflicting interests between speakers and hearers can be used to explain language change. We use tools from evolutionary game theory to characterize the effect of conflicting interests in the case of Jespersen’s cycle. We show how the c…

  • Skilful seasonal predictions for the European energy industry

Open Access•Robin Clark, Robin T Clark et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2017

We assess the utility of seasonal forecasts for the energy industry by showing how recently-established predictability of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) in winter allows predictability of near-surface wind speed and air temperature and therefore energy supply and demand respectively. Our seasonal prediction system (GloSea5) successfully reproduces the influence of the NAO on European climate, leading to skilful forecasts of wind speed and w…

  • The relationship between student-centred lectures, emotional intelligence, and study teams: A Social Telemetry Study With Mobile Telephony

Carl Senior, Clifford Howard et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•2012•References: 36

A student-centred approach to teaching has been conceptualized as a key driver in higher education to facilitate understanding of concepts and improve attainment. The occurrence of student study team behaviours is diagnostic of this approach to teaching. However, the extent to which team behaviours are performed outside the parameters of formal teacher-learner environments remains under-researched. This is problematic as it is unclear whether stu…

  • Generalized Quantifiers and Number Sense

    Open Access•Robin Clark•ARTICLE•Philosophy Compass•2011•References: 20

Generalized quantifiers are functions from pairs of properties to truth-values; these functions can be used to interpret natural language quantifiers. The space of such functions is vast and a great deal of research has sought to find natural constraints on the functions that interpret determiners and create quantifiers. These constraints have demonstrated that quantifiers rest on number and number sense. In the first part of the paper, we turn t…

  • Implications of climate change for agricultural productivity in the early twenty-first century

Open Access•Jemma Gornall, Richard Betts et al.•ARTICLE•Philosophical Transactions of the…•2010

This paper reviews recent literature concerning a wide range of processes through which climate change could potentially impact global-scale agricultural productivity, and presents projections of changes in relevant meteorological, hydrological and plant physiological quantities from a climate model ensemble to illustrate key areas of uncertainty. Few global-scale assessments have been carried out, and these are limited in their ability to captur…

  • Looking After Children: Assessing outcomes in child care. The experience of implementation

    Open Access•Helen Jones, Helen M Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Children & Society•1998

A Department of Health initiative has supported the implementation of Looking After Children in over 90 per cent of local authorities in England. The process has required major organisational change and new values and attitudes towards children looked after away from home. Difficulties arise where management and monitoring systems are not available to support these wider changes and to assess the quality of practice. Nevertheless clear benefits t…

    Robin Clark, Edward L Keenan•ARTICLE•The Linguistic Review•1986

  • On the Nature of Grammatical Relations

    Robin Clark, Alec P Marantz•REVIEW•Language•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 1

In this dissertation, I develop and support a theory of grammatical relations, i.e.~a theory about the connection between semantic roles and dependencies and their expressions in sentences, Grammatical relations are defined as the syntactic counterparts of certain logico-semantic relations, such as the predicate-subject and modifier-modi~iee relations.Associated with each sentence in a language is a "logico-semantic (I-a) progressed only because …
