Movements between Dover and Calais: A Tale of Two Cities and Britain’s island fantasy
Age and Youth, Sound and Vision
This roundtable offers four diverse perspectives on Peter Jackson's innovative and controversial World War I documentary film They Shall Not Grow Old (2018). Jackson's film breaks the mold of the documentary genre in its manipulation and montage of the visual and audio archives held at the Imperial War Museum in London. Air travel for both work and leisure now requires the kind of embarrassed excuse that lighting up a cigarette in company used, for a while, to elicit: I know it's a dirty habit, and it's not good for me or you or anyone else, but I can't seem to stop myself …
Where Heaves the Turf”: Thomas Hardy and the Boundaries of the Earth
W HAT DO WE EXPECT to learn when we scrutinize the boundaries of, or within, Victorian literary studies at the beginning of the twenty-first century? Because many nineteenth-century scholars had always worked within an interdisciplinary paradigm, the theoretical shifts of the last thirty years or so, which broke down divisions between generically distinct discourses, could be said to have brought continuity, rather than change, to this particular…
