Backlash against Liberalism, Views of Importance of Religion, and Perceptions of Vladimir Putin Abroad
A backlash to the Western-led international order and the associated liberal values influences perceptions of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin abroad. Individuals opposed to increasing diversity and gender equality, and who want China rather than the USA to lead the world, are more likely to favor Putin. Individuals to whom religion is important are more likely to favor Putin, who has promoted traditional religious values, than individuals to wh…
Sociological Autopsy of the Suicide of the 159th Victim Following the Itaewon Disaster
The Sociological Study on ‘Taeoom’ Suicides of Korean Nurses

Methods Data from the 2014 Pew Global Attitude Survey are analyzed using ordered logistic regressions to test three main hypotheses: the vertical trust leakage hypothesis, the new Cultu…

Ideology and Threat Perceptions
What determines threat perceptions in the context of potential interstate conflict? We argue that such perceptions are to an important extent driven by domestic political cleavages and ideological differences. The ideology effects are often surprising and are more complex than the conventional wisdom would indicate. We specify the conditions under which conservatives may favor the economic rise of rising powers. Concern about budget deficits affe…
Evaluations of Michelle Obama as First Lady
The election of Barack Obama in 2008 was initially viewed as signaling a postracial era in American politics. However, since 2008, race and racial attitudes have appeared to pervade American political discourse and shape political attitudes and behavior to an even greater extent. Using data from the American National Election Studies, this article examines the extent to which white racial attitudes have shaped evaluations of perhaps the most visi…

Too Far, Too Close

From the 2003 AsiaBarometer survey, seven Asian countries with diverse socioeconomic and religious components are analyzed-India, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Uzbekistan. Government Effectiveness and Institutional Trust in Japan, South Korea, and China
Japan, South Korea, and China have all achieved high economic growth rates in a relatively short period of time; they also have shared values. The phenomenon of rapid economic growth in a short period, however, raises questions about government effectiveness in managing sociopolitical issues such as corruption, human rights, and crime. By using the 2003AsiaBarometersurveys, this article examines citizens' perceptions about government effectivenes…
Cross‐National Analyses of Satisfaction with Democracy and Ideological Congruence
This article examines ideological ties between citizens and parties in power and its impact on satisfaction with democracy in eight consolidated democracies during the late 1990s. Two main propositions are tested: the winner/loser explanation focuses on the post‐election individual attitudes toward an incumbent government, whereas the congruence explanation underlines the proximity between the voters’ ideological tendencies and the policymaking p…
Evaluating US soft power in Asia
The changing dynamics of international politics such as the expansion of the European Union, the growing importance of Asia, and the post-11 September environment have raised great concern about US soft power all over the world. At the governmental level, transpacific relationships may have encouraged military, economic and sociopolitical collaboration. The Asians' perceptions about US soft power at the individual level, however, may not be consi…

Using data from the 1999–2001 World Values and European Values Surveys, this article examines the impact of spiritual values and religious practices on democratic attitudes in twenty countries throughout Western Europe, North America, South America, Asia, and Africa. Citizens' Confidence in Government, Parliament and Political Parties
This article explores citizens' confidence in political institutions in relation to policy responsiveness within and across countries. The core premise of the mandate theory is that democratic elections deliver the median preferences in policy making to satisfy most citizens' interests. Thus, citizens will display greater confidence toward their political institutions when they perceive that their preferences are pursued in policy making. Twelve …
Cross-temporal and cross-national comparisons of party left-right positions
We investigate the cross-time and cross-nation comparability of party left-right position measurements by expert surveys and the Comparative Manifesto Project (CMP). While expert surveys show party left-right positions to be mostly static, we find the CMP records systematic party movements for one-third of the parties analyzed. On the issue of cross-national comparability, we find cross-national variation in expert surveys is muted. They contain …
