Tilopā’s Two Mahāmudrā Songs: A Comparative Study Including Critical Editions of the Dohākośa Within the Sārārthapañjikā and the Gaṅgāma with Rang byung rdo rje’s Commentary
Til(l)ipāda/Tilopā, conventionally called Tilopa (10th/11th century), is among the most influential figures in the history of tantric Buddhism and considered the major transmission holder in the Tibetan bKa’ brgyud pa traditions. One of his most prominent works, the Gaṅges Mahāmudrā ( Gaṅgāma ), has been translated multiple times and received considerable attention in academic research. Tattva, vrata, caryā: On the Relationship of View and Practice in the First Chapter of Padmavajra's Guhyasiddhi
The religious worldview of the mantranaya (esoteric Mahāyāna or Vajrayāna) can arguably be seen as rooted in the perspective that reality (tattva) is to be self-experienced (svasamvedya) through contemplative practices, serving as both their means (upāya) and expression (caryā). The tantric path-model of Padmavajra's Guhyasiddhi, an exegetical text in the Guhyasamāja tradition, supposedly enables individuals to rapidly realize reality, a state al…
Rethinking Terms: Dohā, Vajra-, and Caryāgīti
Dohās, vajragīti, and caryāgīti are key terms associated with the poetic writings of the Mahāsiddhas. This study focuses on Apabhraṃśa dohās, their commentaries, Tibetan translations, and collections containing them, shedding light on previously neglected aspects of this text type. By investigating the historical and original contexts of these three terms and comparing them to their later applications in traditional contexts and academia, this pa…
Towards a Reassessment of Indrabhuti’s Jnanasiddhi
This article argues for the reassessment of Indrabhuti’s Jnanasiddhi in the light of newly discovered primary witnesses and previously unnoticed relations to other works. Presumably composed in the late eighth to early ninth century CE, it belongs to the earlier phase of Tantric Buddhism, a transitional period between the predominance of the Yoga- and Mahayogatantras to the later Yoginitantras, and relates to a variety of important scriptures of …
